DVD Players That Support DivX, AVI and MPG? |
|
I heard about some DVD players that support these video formats on Tech TV a while back. You could burn the mpg's, avi's on a CD or DVD and watch them on your TV using your DVD player....does anyone know if there are any DVD players that support these formats? And if so, are they real picky or will they playback most videos? thanks a million....

i thought it was way long overdue...DVD players supported mpg's, avi's and other video formats... the licensing can't be that much... even dvd's that support mp3's...are dirt cheap...and they have to pay for licensing...

2. All DVD players support |
|
mpg since DVDs use MPEG-2 as the compression scheme.
The best player for you at the moment is the Philips DVP642. It plays everything, can be hacked to be region-free, and is cheap. I think it's about $69 at Amazon.

In fact I have yet to see a DVD player that doesn't play MPEG-1 (VCD).

I don't mean you have to first convert the mpg to vcd...I mean burn the actual mpg on cd...no converting to anything... and play that bad boy on the DVD player... most DVD players can't do that...

But it sounds as if you're looking for a streaming client and not a DVD player.

the mpg may in fact be VCD ready and compatible...but you still need software to get it "ready" to play on a DVD player. I know some DVDV players can do this...I've heard baout them on tech TV....but I fogot which ones...

17. that sounds good, but |
|
can I burn mpgs (mpeg1) files on cd and play them...without having to convert it to VCDs? Thats great that it plays Divx AVI's, but I also have alot of mpgs (mpeg1) files...as most people who have videos on their computer do.

18. Mine can play mpgs directly |
|
It's a cheapie model I got from Best Buy last christmas. Some no name brand actually. It plays more stuff than the $500 Pioneer one my mom bought.
I paid 100 for it, and it came with surround speakers & a subwoofer.

The players based on the ESS chip (philips, for example) have a quite decent playback quality, but I don't see the advantage when compared to streaming multimedia clients.

Philips DVP642 (It has played almost everything I have thrown at including just mpegs burned on a CD as well as every DiVX and XViD I own. WMV is about the ONLY thing it won't do (although it does to some extent but not very well).
Amazon's got the Philips DVP642 Progressive Scan DVD player for $65 and the usual free shipping. Not only is this a solid progressive scan player, but it can play files burned to CD and DVD+R in most major formats, including DivX (3/4/5), VCD, SVCD, ASF, XviD, MPEGS, MP3, JPEGS. The only complaint most people seem to have is its inability to play subtitles from external SRT (fixed in a firmware update) files, but unless you watch a lot of anime or foreign flicks without the subs burned it, you'll probably be able to live without it. Oh, and it can be region unlocked with the remote--no firmware hack needed.
