Sean Connery Fans: Disney's Darby O'Gill Released on DVD With Xtras |
|
This Disney DVD title was released on 8/3 to no fanfare at all. The film's use of matte and forced perspective has inspired Spielberg and others.
This was - I believe - Connery's first film, at least in the USA. He had performed "Requiem for a Heavyweight" on Brit TV and was offered contracts from many US studios. He signed with Fox - and never made a film with them. They lent him to Disney for Darby O'Gill.
The DVD includes some nice bonuses - an interview with Connery on the filming, a backgrounder on the special effects used in the film, and the Disney promo show that ran on TV ("I Captured the King of the Leprechauns") in glorious B&W.
I've liked this film since I first saw it in the theatre as a kid. I bought my copy for $13 plus s&h through Amazon (CD-DVD World in Canada) after a fruitless search at retail stores including Disney stores. It took a week to get here and looks great...a big improvement over the laserdisc I still own.
