Really, I am so sick to death of people talking about Phelps like he's the second coming of Jesus.

No offense intended, I guess my nerves are frayed because of NBC's abysmal-as-usual coverage of the Games. All I have heard since the OC is Michael Phelps this, Michael Phelps that, Michael Phelps cured cancer and rescues kittens, etc. I'm so tired of it.

Especially since I'm an Ian Thorpe fan. He's so adorable. :)

The hype was from the media, not from him, who were all saying "Mark Spitz! Mark Sptiz!" They do this during every Olympics, find some athlete to create a story about.

He wouldn't be winning like he is if he sucked.

My point is that he's a swimmer, not the second coming of Jebus. And he's a jerk to boot.

He was being an arrogant prick in every interview I've seen--at least until he lost the one race, when suddenly "1 gold medal is more than an honor".

Sorry I'd rather cheer for Thorpe, who in addition to being talented, is also a nice guy.

9. I read a story about him

just before the games started. The reporter was trying to hype the comparison to Spitz, possibility of 8 golds etc. Phelps just said his goal was 1 gold medal.

Whether he was playing at modesty, or trying to offset the hype, I admired him for publicly keeping perspective.

I was out and about on the weekend, and happened to see the preliminary heats for the 4 x 100 free relay. The US got smoked by the South African team, who missed the World Record by .17 seconds, and all the announcers could talk about was who would or wouldn't be on the US team in the finals. NBC sucks. For that, I was glad to read that the South Africans had won in the finals, and set a new WR.

I don't think Michael Phelps actually expected he would win 8 golds. Apart from the question of whether he would be on the 4 x 100 relay, he probably knew he had a big uphill fight in the 200 free. And of course, any relay completely invalidates "him" in favor of "the team" - no one wins a relay on their own, nor even controls how the team does. Stupid media hype.

I'll toast his however-many medals of whatever metal. :toast:
I don't care what he thinks of his Escalade, or how much money he dumps into it.
