28. "American Classics" for lack of a better phrase--outstanding
I've had 3 knockout dinners there. It's a little off the beaten path, so it's not usually insanely crowded. And yes, lovely neighborhood.

See my post below for more.

8. Ozumo!!!
This place is fabulous!! Here's their website:http://www.ozumo.com/

Have the edamame, the mori-san and the black cod (gindara). They also have saki martinis. Yuuummmmm.

We also really liked the Fifth Floor, but it's a bit swanky, might need a reservation in advance there. And for drinks, the coolest bar is the Redwood Bar at the Clift Hotel. They have a decent restaurant there as well, Asia de Cuba (get the spare ribs).

33. French- Here's their web-site
http://www.cafeclaude.com/

It's a fun little Parisian bistro. Great food and cool people.
----
If you want to feel like you're dining in a Paris bistro, head for Café Claude, a block from the hotel on Claude Lane, an alley running between Bush and Sutter. The waiters, the food, and even the decor is completely French. Having just returned from Paris, I assure you the cafe is the real thing.

Stop in for a continental breakfast, a sandwich at lunch, a cassoulet or plate of mussels for dinner, or just a glass of French wine. The traditional French onion soup is great, and of course there are French desserts! On warm days, there are tables set up outside. Live jazz is featured Thursday and Saturday evenings and sometimes other music Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. They are closed Sunday.

Next to the grocery store. If you're going to live here, you might as well eat with the locals.

edit: Italian.

22. Restaurant
OK -- Most of the restaurants the others have mentioned are tourist restaurants .... you must avoid.

If your a veggy lover try Greens at Fort Mason
http://greensrest.citysearch.com/1.html

Seafood try the Waterfront Restaurant/Cafe on the Pier 7 On Embarcadero (I'm partial - I designed the bar)
http://www.waterfrontsf.com/

Californian Cuisine try Moose's at Washington Square (North Beach)
Pricey - so go with the Prix Fixe menu.
http://www.mooses.com/

Overall you cannot do wrong in SF, though I would avoid the overly touristy spots and forget Chinatown ... I have yet to have a good meal there. For Chinese food I go out to the Richmond District.

Enjoy!!!

26. I've only eaten one place in SF...
...touristy joint on Pier 39...seafood, overlooking the sea lion colony. Tasty, but unremarkable.

On another note, can I move with you? Please? I'll just crash on the couch until I find a job. :7

27. Which neighborhood? Makes all the difference
If you're in Noe Valley, go to Firefly (top of 24th st.)

If you're in the Mission, go to Foreign Cinema.

If you're between the Mission and the Castro, go to Delfina (on 18th near Guerrero)

If you're in the Castro, go to the Red Grill (on 18th off Castro), or Blue (on Market by 16th). Also Home and Chow (both at Market and Church) are outstanding.

If you're in the Filmore area, go to Julia.

If you're in the Civic Center area, go to Jardinere or Indigo.

If you're out in the avenues (Richmond or Sunset), go to the Cliff House. Or just drive down Clement St. (parallel to Geary), and take your pick of awesome Chinese or Italian places between 2nd Ave and 38th. (Look for Green Apple books and Toy Boat ice cream.)

If you're near North Beach, you could indeed try to get into the Stinking Rose; it's very crowded and touristy, though. Viva or the Mona Lisa #3 are a couple little places people don't frequent as much, and the food's awesome.

If you're in Chinatown, go to...um...I think it's the Golden Palace.

If you're South of Market, go to Lulu's, or Maya (if you like Mexican).

If you're down in the States by Potrero Hill, I've heard great things about Chez Papa.

That should cover most of the city. Welcome. (I'm in San Jose, but get to SF fairly often.)
