HELP! Need Advice On Choosing Laptop Computer For My Dad
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 10:18 AM by cryingshame
I'm working on writing/editing a book for my Dad and his laptop is screwed up.

He's going to BestBuy right now to buy a new one and I need advice.

Please help, we don't need tons of memory. .

Will mainly be using Word Perfect and occassionally some photographs (which we won't store on the computer) so a CD Burner is needed but not for music.

Thanks to anyone willing to give us feedback!

Robin :)

1. I've had good experiences with Toshiba
but I imagine any laptop will do for word processing and photo-editing. Look at battery-life and type of processor. I recommend Intel Pentium or Centrino for laptops. Stay away from Celeron or AMD Duron.

hard drive and memory can be upgraded easily later on so they are not that important. And make sure you can connect your photo equipment.

And if you want cheap, HP is decent. And if you want really cheap, there are many decent used laptops on ebay.

2. May be too expensive
but anything apple gets my vote. Damn near maintenance free, and incredibly intuitive.

3. iBook
A little more expensive than things PC, but doesn't crash. You won't find them at BestBuy, but can get next day deleivery from MacMall, MacConnection, MacWarehouse if there isn't an Apple store near you.

7. Toshiba Is Rate Pretty High!
Apparently there were some stinker models that broke a lot.

But most versions of Satellite get good reviews.

Getting LOTS of good reviews online and guests here at our business who recommend ibooks. :)

10. A Toshiba pushed me over to Macs
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 11:45 AM by Mika
I just got tired of fighting Windoze.

I don't know about Toshiba's current line, but switching to Mac was the best move I've made when it comes to computers, including laptops.

Macs come in at a slightly higher price, but the value and lack of troubles common to Winboxes (for me) is worth the extra $$.

9. IBM Thinkpad T42... it's the only laptop that
protects the hard drive in the event of a drop/fall/etc.

Their desktops aren't always the greatest, but I respect their laptops.

Toshiba also makes good laptops.

I'm not keen on Dell though.

And I hate HP. The redefine junk.
