Please advise if you have any experience?

You don't even need any accelerant unless the documents are wet.
Check your local ordinances first, though.

6. Do you need a receipt showing they were destroyed? |
|
If so there are professional document destruction companies in the phone book.
Else, buy yourself a good paper shredder and go to town. Get one that does cross-cut.

10. Go find yourself a friend with a fireplace |
|
Try and roll the documents up into logs first.
Also if you can't get your own shredder, many offices have one, you might try borrowing one from a friend.

27. Don't do this. Paper burns too hot for most domestic chimneys |
|
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 09:58 PM by SOteric
and the burning ash can float and cling. You could end up with a chimney fire or worse.

9. Acid, wood chipper, water |
|
Warning: do not do this at home.
Warning: Toxic fumes. Take HASMAT precautions.
Get a big tub of any strong acid. Dump the paper in the acid. Instant destruction.
2nd choice, wood chipper. Just be careful not go clog it or get too close.
3rd choice ordinary water. Jump dump the documents in as one big clump. They'll get stuck together and turn into an illegible mass.
Dry and burn at your leisure.

Either use a burn barrel, or just build a pyre on your driveway.
If you live near a lake, you can take them out in tied bundles, nothing around them, and just sink them in the middle of the lake. Bye-bye paper.

19. They will never be destroyed |
|
Bushites will come and use top-secret lasers to reassemble the documents, upon which they will find anti-Bush rhetoric in there. Upon an investigation you state that the anti-Bush rhetoric was really agaisnt Bush beans because their secret recipe actually sucks. But it is of no avail, as large "burley-type" men in black suits and sunglasses with stupid headset microphones promptly throw you in jail, not telling you what your crime is and refusing your plead to speak to a lawyer. (Patriot Act anyone...)
Ok, now being serious, find a friend with a Chiminea. Burning paper in one of those puppies is really fun, plus the left over ash is supposedly a useful fertilizer!

22. You can't really burn a stack of paper. |
|
IF you think you need to burn it, I'd suggest going thru and crumpling each sheet into a not so tight ball. Part of the reason paper won't burn in a stack is the lack of air in between the sheets. You could try the grill thing again--but maybe put a fan next to the grill so there was an increase in air flow... I dunno.
I agree that water is probably the easiest way to make paper unreadable, however. IF all you need to do is render it unreadable, then throw it in your tub and give it a big stir while it is in the water. You might want to add some kind of acid type thing to the water to break down the pulp a bit--(vinegar maybe?) Squeeze out the water let it dry and burn it at your leisure or even just send it with the garbage man next pick up day.
Bleach might be an idea--but I have no idea if it would throw off funky gasses when combined with the left over chemicals used in processing the paper originally...
They did sell shredders at Meijer for home use that were something like 20 bucks... Maybe a shredder is less expensive than you think.
