What is a good price for a digital camera? |

That is what I am getting my wife for Christmas. And being the computer nitwit I am I dont know.

You're covering a REALLY broad spectrum of products with very little detail to go on.
You can spend anywhere from $150 to $3,000 for a digital camera.
The site mentioned above is a good resource. There are a few other similar sites, but I don't have them bookmarked on this computer, I'll try to remember to look them up when I get home tonight.

and is only 11 megapixels... and when film is 13-20MP (depending on film type and speed) with a higher range of color gamut and shadow detail, $8000 is WAY overpriced.

I'd never get anything less than 5 megapixels for a point'n'shoot (or 6mp for SLR, which uses a better sensor as well).
I still prefer film for quality reasons, but eventually digital will surpass film in all things. Not yet though. :-(
