I think the kids need a break. They need to get outside and run off a little energy during the day. And not to play organizated team sports necessarily if they don't want to but to climb the monkey bars and play in the sand and on the swings if they want.

3. No, but they've minimalized it. |
We get a 15 minute "recess," each day, plus the kids get a 35 minute lunch; whatever time is left over when they are done eating is "recess." I've found that, to make sure every body gets to use the restroom, run, play, shout, relax, and talk until they're ready to refocus in the classroom takes about 20 - 30 minutes. They barely get started with the 15 minutes before we're done.

7. Our high school lunches were 23 minutes |
About half that time was spent waiting in the lunch line.

6. Hyperactivity, childhood obesity on the rise, no wonder |
Don't schools even think about these things. School age children are naturually very active. Many have trouble sitting still and concentrating for any length of time. Most have trouble sitting still and concentrating all day. Solution: Send them out to play a few times a day. Childhood obesity is on the rise. This sort of thing used to be rare in the past. The reason was not just diet, but because children used to go out and play. Many parents are busy and worry about their children's safety if they are playing outside without adult supervision. Solution: Send the children out to play a few times a day when they can be supervised by teachers and other adults at school. Doesn't this seem a bit obvious?
