My little girl goes off to high school today. |
|
Last night was so bittersweet. She could not sleep and in her eyes I saw my three year old again. Instead of popping up and asking for a glass of water or another story, she was popping up worried because she couldn't find her schedule. Instead of tossing and turning with nightmares of monsters, she was tossing and turning with nightmares of mean kids (the true monsters in life). "What should I wear?" (this from a kid going to a school with a dress code). "Will you walk me in so I don't have to go in by myself?" This from a kid who has tried to prove her independence from me since they cut the cord. And so I told her the tales of travesty from my own Freshman experience...How I accidentally (truly it was an accident) cut my wrist on my locker on the first day of school and felt like an ass asking the school secretary for a bandaid...after not being able to find the office for ten minutes (it was a very big school). And so, as I told her bedtimes stories for the almost grown up...she drifted off to sleep...and I went into the living room and cried over the baby she once was....

|
get her daughter ready for college and it's making me cry. for you. I don't know if I'll ever be able to handle that.

They truly do grow up so fast. My oldest will start Jr. High next week. She's going from a tiny Catholic school (six kids in her class) to a gigantic public school (400 kids in her grade). She's pretty confident, so I think she'll be okay, but still we worry.
Tell me again why we have kids? ;)

We have kids to propagate the species and because for all the crap they put us through we don't know what our lives would be like without them.
BTW what did we do on Friday nights before we had kids??

Went out, saw movies, had dinner and drinks, went bowling, occasionally had wild sex. Those were the days, huh? ;)

heart. That and my son starting full day first grade. Whatever will I do with myself?? :(

4. My daughter started high school last year and it has been such an |
|
eye opener, I still can't believe she's a sophmore and has only a few short years before she graduates.
Before you know it your daughter will be coming home telling you stories about all the hot senior guys - that's when you'll really cry:-)

THat's one lucky kid. I had fears like that, and my mom just made fun of me and told me suck it up. No hugs no reassurances. Just suck it up ya big baby. Duckie

15. Ah, thanks. I have my moments when she wishes anybody BUT me |
|
was her mom. She's a good kid though, one that I love being around, and I guess she brings out the best in me.
Thanks again, Duckie, Laura
P.S. My own mother sounds a lot like your mother, which is why I made the conscientious effort to always "be there" for my kids-whether they said they wanted me or not.

My son starts high school next week. Tomorrow night we go to an open house where he can check out his home for the next four years and get his schedule. He seems pretty confident about the whole thing right now, but Monday night, will be a different story I am sure.

My daughter is about to turn 10, no more single digit birthdays, thats making me a bit sad. It's hard to believe that they aren't babies anymore or that they can actually do things for themselves. I hope she and you have a great day! :)

like the Joni Mitchell song Circle Game! Cartwheels turn to car wheels all too soon. Yesterday my son was a little boy of 10 and now, faster than seems possible, he's moved twenty times 'round the seasons.'
Yes, we're all captive on a carousel of time, so enjoy every age/stage of your children because the time really does fly..

My oldest is a junior in h.s. Back to school night is interesting--she's going to the same high school I went to. And a couple of the teachers I had are still there 30 years later. And I run into a bunch of the kids I went to school with in the halls. Now THAT'S wierd. I don't know what I'l do when she goes off to college.

I know from my experiences with my husband that forever sometimes seems like how long it will take to feel better.
We were just discussing this last night, and he still holds so much guilt after 4 years. Anyway, I'm thinking of you and hoping that tomorrow dawns bright with much joy, peace, and possibility for you.
Hugs, Laura

20. My youngest started HS on Monday |
|
I picked up 5 friends so she wouldn't have to walk in alone and then cried after I dropped them off. They are all so grown up.
Sometimes I want those adoring toddlers back but I'm so proud and happy with the super independent, outspoken young women I have that I would never go back. The lack of a phone at night does drive me crazy, though. I now refuse to answer the phone, ever. It's rarely for me.

They've been like sisters and are the only two from middle school moving on to this school. They both looked gorgeous...too gorgeous.
Good Luck with the next four years.
