Is there something you can buy for a chipped windshield? |
|
One of our cars has a nickel sized chip in it. It passed inspection yesterday, which I was worried about. So from that perspective I'm fine. But if there is a way to avoid paying $300 for a whole new windshield, or even something you can buy at an auto repair store to fill it in a reasonable way I'd like to try that first.

1. Is this a star or an actual divot in the windshield? |

I'm not familiar with any "home treatment" for windshield dings, since the tricky part of windshield repair is to maintain the structural integrity of the safety glass.
The glass shop can fill a star with an epoxy resin, though, for something like $40-50. You might call your insurance company and see if you have coverage for glass. They will often fill the star for free. (It's far cheaper than replacing the windshield.)

2. My insurance covers replacements |

You can call a glass master out to fix it. They drill the hole and fill it with some glass epoxy, heat it up and it sets like glass. But it may be a little hazy at the spot. That's why I always get a full replacement.

or crack...I bought one called "fix-a-Windshield" for about $10 at Advance Auto Parts...Read the directions to see if it'll work on something that large.
