Pillowtop Mattresses Must Be Outlawed, Immediately |
|
I caved. I went along with the decision to buy an expensive pillowtop mattress....and it's ruining our marriage.
I haven't had a decent nights sleep in over two months. I've tried various adjustments....placing a heavy quilt beneath the bed cover.....adding a sleeping bag pad under "my" side of the bed. I can no longer even think of sleeping on my stomach, as is my custom, without experiencing a nagging pain in the small of my back. So I try to sleep on my back, my side, curled up in a fetal position. Nothing works.
I've even tried to overcome my situation through the use of various chemicals....to no avail.
And it's not only me. I've voiced my dissatisfaction for these monsters to others and it always ends the same. The women love them....the men are made to suffer. It probably has something to do with the fact that men generally weigh more and are more affected. I know of no less than half a dozen other men who now sleep on the floor, on the couch or in the spare bedroom because they can't get a good night's rest. It's almost as if it's some kind of vile plot.
Gentlepersons....these pillowtop mattresses are evil. Pure evil.
Men..don't be tricked in to buying one of these. You'll regret it, literally, for the 'rest' of your life.

1. If it's any consolation... |
|
I'm female and I can't stand the puffiness either. (We have a standard mattress that works just dandily, and we'll replace it with another standard mattress when it goes.)
You may want to talk to one of those bad-back stores about an ergonomic sleeping pillow or something.

4. Hmm..sleeping pillow. Good idea. |
|
The main problem is that the mattress sags too much beneath my lower torso. I've tried placing a small pillow under my ass, but it's too uncomfortable.
Perhaps one of those big body pillows might work. I'll give it a shot!

The firmness of my matress can be measured on the Moh's Hardness Scale, and that's the way I like it.

No womb for me, no sir.
Feathers have only one use in the bedroom, and it's got nothing to do with my esteemed repose. Unless you count the fact that I almost always fall asleep immediately afterwards.

It's becoming more and more apparent, that this it one issue that is divided according to gender.
Men - Hate Pillowtops.
Women - Love Them.

15. Didja Try a Piece Of Plywood Under Your Side? |
|
My dad did that back in the day. My mom, i guess, liked a really soft mattress, and my dad, not! He bought what she wanted, then put a piece of plywood under his side.
They were married until the day my dad died. So, it might have been the secret.
Me, i'm a flat back sleeper with legs folded up toward me. I could sleep on a workout bench. If i fall asleep on the couch watching TV, my big beastie dog can also sleep on the other end of the couch. Me, and a 110# dog on the same couch sleeping.
My wife has NEVER complained about me taking up too much room. I don't even think i move when i'm sleeping. So, i can sympathize, but i can't empathize. The Professor

21. The damn mattress is almost 20" thick!!!! |
|
It would make no difference. In fact, the box spring is rock hard.
Any improvement would have to be make on the topside of the mattress.
I'm thinking of suspending a hammock over the bed.

I switched from a pillow top to Swedish Foam recently and I have seen the light. I don't think I'll ever have a spring mattress again. In fact I don't like to travel that much anymore because I miss my bed so much.
The one thing I really hated about the pillow top was that it wasn't reversible. I liked being able to turn my mattress every once in a while with my old spring mattress.
Love that foam tho- We like a soft bed so we even went further and got a foam pad as well. It's like sleeping on a marshmallow.

23. Sleep affects your health! |
|
Ditch the damn pillowtop and go buy a nice latex foam mattress. No sleep generally leads to poorer health and misery. I'd buy a foam one if we had the money, but fortunately our plain old spring mattress is a) not a pillowtop and b) fairly comfy.

24. Does the bed appear to have a big indentation in it? |
|
When no one is laying in the bed, stand back and take a look. Can you see a big indentation or dip in the middle? How old is your mattress? We had a pillow top that started to sag when we had only owned it for about a year. When the bed was made it looked awful. We filed a claim with the manufacturer and they replaced it, and they let us choose any mattress set we wanted, so we went with the standard mattress. It was alot better.
Also, even though a lot of the mattresses have the pillow top, you can find them with different levels of underlying firmness. You have to test a lot of mattresses to find a good one, it is really a pain.

27. Yes. In my estimation, it does sag. |
|
Edited on Wed Aug-25-04 10:29 AM by XNASA
But I'd say it's more the pillowtop section, rather than the mattress core that is sagging. It's especially noticable in the morning.
The biggest obstacle is....Mrs. XNASA loves it. I need to convince her to trade it in. We've only had it a few months.
It's quite a dilemma, but I do intend to contact the manufacturer, Serta.

We were the opposite, it was OK with hubby, but I was so sore in the morning I could hardly stand up.
Maybe you can convince the Mrs. to go look at mattresses again, I bet you can find a pillow top that has a firmer base so you can both be comfortable.
We have since changed mattresses again and are using the Simmons back care and we both like it. It does have a pillow top, but not as extreme as some of them.
Good luck.

I used to sell mattresses for a living. Those extra-soft Sertas tend to get too soft. I like my Sealy PT, which I've slept on for a couple years.
You may want to look into a visco-elastic (Swedish) foam overlay. This could help a little. Or try to find some harder foam, to make your side of the bed a little firmer. Get a visco pillow to support your neck. This may help.
There are many types of mattresses out there, hard, soft and in the middle. People have different sleep preferences.
I would also recommend not sleeping on your belly. Bad for the back.
And check into the sleep number bed at your own risk. Rush Lowbrow sleeps on one, and it could lead to excessive drug use.
