What Song Would You Like To Perform In Drag? |
|
I've got two that come to mind right now... "It Shoulda Been Me" and "I've Never Been To Me".

I might think of more later.

3. Just To Clarify... I Couldn't Do "Pretty-Drag" or "Lovely-Drag"... |
|
or "High-fashion Drag" where unsuspecting audience members are asking "is he or isn't she?" --- No... I'd definitely be doing the comedy drag.
Trust me... I make a pretty ugly drag queen. (And somewhere there are PHOTOS to prove it.)

But in drag I look more like a Brittany Spears - only twice for Halloween. Could also pull off a Shania Twain (sp??) with high kicks in "I Feel Like a Woman".
Although, I would prefer to be Cher riding down a chandelier.

|
I am what I am I am my own special creation So come take a look Give me the hook or the ovation It’s my world That I want to have a little pride in My world And it’s not a place I have to hide in Life’s not worth a damn Till you can say I am what I am
I am what I am I don’t want praise I don’t want pity I bang my own drum Some think it’s noise I think it’s pretty And so what if I love each sparkle and each bangle Why not try to see things from a different angle Your life is a sham Till you can shout out I am what I am
I am what I am And what I am needs no excuses I deal my own deck Sometimes the aces sometimes the deuces It’s one life and there’s no return and no deposit One life so it’s time to open up your closet Life’s not worth a damn till you can shout out I am what I am
I am what I am

Oh I am Oh I am I am, I am, I am good I am, I am, I am strong I am, I am, I am worthy I am, I am, I belong
I am
I am
Ooh ooh ooh ooh I am
I am, I am, I am useful I am, I am, I am true I am, I am somebody I am as good as you, ah ha Ah ha, ooh ooh ooh ooh yes I am Ah ah ah ah

18. I'd Also Like To Do Some Judy... "The Man That Got Away" |
|
The night is bitter, The stars have lost their glitter, The winds grow colder, And suddenly you're older And all because of The man that got away.
No more his eager call, The writing's on the wall, The dreams you dreamed have all Gone astray. The man that won you Has run off and undone you. That great beginning Has seen it's final inning, Don't know what happened It's all a crazy game.
No more that all-time thrill For you've been through the mill, And never a new love will Be the same.
Good riddance, good-bye. Every trick of his you're on to - But fools will be fools and where's he gone to?
The road gets rougher, It's lonelier and tougher. With hope you burn up, Tomorrow he may turn up. There's just no letup The livelong night and day.
Ever since this world began There is nothing sadder than A one-man woman Looking for the man that got away . . .
<interlude>
The road gets rougher, It's lonelier and tougher. With hope you burn up, Tomorrow he may turn up. There's just no letup The livelong night and day.

19. Or Maybe Patsy... "Walkin' After Midnight" |
|
I go out walkin' after midnight, out in the moonlight just like we used to do I'm always walkin' after midnight searchin' for you.
I walk for miles, along the highway, well that's just my way, of sayin I love you I'm always walkin' after midnight searchin' for you
I stop to see a weepin' willow cryin' on it's pillow, maybe he's cryin' for me, and as the skies turn gloomy, night winds whisper to me, I'm lonesome as I can be
I go out walkin' after midnight, out in the starlight, just hopin' you may be somewhere a walkin' after midnight searchin' for me
I stop to see a weepin' willow cryin' on it's pillow, maybe he's cryin' for me, and as the skies turn gloom, night winds whisper to me, I'm lonesome as I can be
I go out walkin' after midnight, out in the moonlight, just hopin' you may be somewhere a walkin' after midnight searchin' for me

Edited on Wed Aug-25-04 10:55 PM by pagerbear
Life is very rough and tumble For a humble diseuse One must betray one's troubles never Whatever occurs
Night after night Have to look bright Whether you're well or ill People must laught their fill You mustn't sleep Til dawn comes creeping.
Though I never really grumble, Life's a jumble indeed And in my efforts to succeed I've had to formulate a creed.
I believe in doing what I can In crying when I must In laughing when I choose Hey ho, if love were all I should be lonely.
I believe the more you love a man, The more you give your trust, The more you're bound to lose. Although when shadows fall I think if only Somebody splendid really needed me Someone affectionate and dear Cares would be ended if I knew that he Wanted to have me near.
But I believe that since my life began The most I've had is just a talent to amuse. Hey ho, if love were all. Hey ho, if love were all.

|
I'm a girl and by me that's only great! I am proud that my silhouette is curvy! That I walk with a sweet and girlish gait, With my hips kind of swively and swervey!
I adore being dressed in something frilly When my date comes to get me at my place Out I go with my Joe or John or Willy Like a filly who is running for a race!
When I have a brand new hairdo And my eyelashes all in curl I float as the birds on air do I enjoy being a girl!
When men say I'm cute and funny And my teeth aren't teeth but pearl I just lap it up like honey I enjoy being a girl!
I flip when a fellow sends me flowers! I drool over dresses made of lace! I talk on the telephone for hours With a pound and a half of cream upon my face!
Oh dammit! What's the last verse?!

47. Allen - Did you ever see Ella Fitzgerald perform "It Shoulda Been Me"? |
|
The original DC Ella Fitzgerald drag queen, that is? She actually took you into that church wedding ceremony. You actually saw her tremendous self coming down the aisle yelling at the preacher to stop the wedding, that husband is hers! And just when she's hurtling "It shoulda been me," she snatches off those two wighats piled up on her head and stamps them into the floor. So transfixed you have been by her performance, it is only at this point, when she's stamping and grinding her wigs into the ground in fury and protest, that you realize that her big drag queen feet are shoeless, bare. Ella Fitzgerald, barefoot would-be bride-to-be.
If you can do one-tenth of what Ella did with that song, your performance is something that people should see!

|
It was when she was first getting started, back in late 70s, early 80s. I saw her perform it on several occasions, it became part of her repertoire. Since I haven't lived in DC and haven't seen her perform in more than 20 years, I can only imagine she's better now than then. Next time you see her, ask her about it. She worked that song from one end and back again. I remember she started out slow, with the slow version, and worked her way into a mad frenzy with the more speeded up dance floor version of the song as her encore, which went on and on. That I can remember this song in such detail after all these decades is a testament to what Ella did with it. Ladies and Gentlemen, the legend, Ella Fitzgerald. Tell her an old fan said, Hi. (His name is Darryl, I think. But everybody called her Ella.)
