Music on the INTERNET vs. the library
Can someone explain this to me? You can check out a CD at the library - nobody in the music industry makes money every time it is checked out. Or do they? What is the difference? What is the difference between a writer (of books) selling one book to a library that hundreds can read and a person downloading music off the INTERNET? One CD? Please understand that I just don't get it and would like to know.

1. Because the RIAA are a bunch of self destructing morans!
Instead of understanding the power of the new technology to distribute their product in a more efficient and profitable way they attempt to stop the inexorable inertia of technological advancement.

2. The maximalist position the RIAA takes
...would eliminate recordings at public libraries as well as video rental stores.

These jokers actually thought that people would accept the DivX idea, with a disc that whould only unlock for a limited number of viewings--with a phone line to Big Brother coming out of your player.

We know how that went over.

The thing is, they think they're selling crack.

They think that, if they treat their customers like criminals for copying, that those people will then turn around and buy their stuff legally--because they just gotta, gotta, gotta have it.

Stupid and arrogant.

Steve Jobs showed them you could make money selling music online--but only by backing away from the you-have-no-rights position of the RIAA. It works.

I guess, though, that once you get a taste for door-busting raids, it's kind of hard to shake.
