Spectator attacks marathon leader

CBC SPORTS ONLINE - The final athletic event of the Athens Olympics took a bizarre and tragic turn when a spectator grabbed the marathon race leader with just five kilometres left on Sunday.

Vanderlei de Lima of Brazil had a 40-second lead when a man wearing a costume and a sign on his back ran into the race lane, grabbed the runner and pulled him into the crowd.

De Lima came back onto the course but quickly lost his lead to Stephano Baldini of Italy, who ran into Panathinaikon Stadium and crossed the finish line at two hours, four minutes and 49 seconds to win the gold.

"It's a major tragedy," says CBC athletics analyst Steve Ovett. "It sickens me to see something like this happen. It's absolutely disgusting."

The protester was arrested and taken to a jail in Athens.

For those not watching the Olympics right now, the men's marathon got hit with a little spectator intereference. Vanderlien de Lima of Brazil was in the lead, before a protestor grabbed him and shoved him into the crowd. He just finished third, behind Italy and USA.

The BBC commentator is saying de Lima should share the gold, and I have to agree.

Some idiot in a clown suit came out of the audience and TACKLED THE BRAZILIAN RUNNER INTO THE GROUND! It was at 32/33 kilometers. He was LEADING. By a GREAT distance. He ended up passed by an Italian and an American and got bronze.

afternoon and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. There was a cop on a motorcycle right behind him too. Where did this guy come from? When NBC showed the overhead shot, traffic was moving on the other side of the road. The guy had to run across a busy road of traffic without being stopped.
