okay, I installed panther, and have been screaming ever since. it is so NOT normal to me, not...what's the word I'm looking for...so not os 9.
anyway, I wanted to install some software and it wouldn't do it in X so I went to the system folder and started the computer as 9 and now I can't get back to X.
can someone help me???
and, yeah, I have a book, and I'll keep looking...
thanks in advance.

1. Go to System Preferences. |
|
Should be in your dock or your Apple Menu.
Under "System" there should be an icon named "Classic" or "System 9" or somesuch. Click it, and then click "Stop" to stop System 9.
Does that help?

usually a few items below the apple on the left.
once you force quit it, it will tell you that changes won't be saved. ignore that - unless you have NOT saved your work and installation.
Check to see if your program you wish to install is osX compatible. If it only runs on OS9, that is your problem (and solution). You just have to keep running 9 for that program.
OSX generally does a really smooth, fast and fault free job on all installations, so I suspect that the problem is older software not made for OSX. If that doesn't work, PM me and we will talk.

I found X in my startup disk and was able to relaunch.
BUT in X it says I don't have enough something...I am moving my place all around at this same time to make room changes..long story...and my computer says it cannot launch 9 when I start up in X and tells me to empty the trash or remove stuff from the system folder or something so I am still at a loss.
I suppose I'll just have to go between the two in via the system folder and restart until I can figure out what the problem is.
...and, yes, I have some old peripherals that I cannot afford to replace and do not want to replace and so X doesn't seem to like them.

At work, on the G4 tower, when we want to go from OS X to reboot in 9, it takes forever (well seems like it) for the 9 icon to show up.

5. I hated OS X for a long time |
|
But I've gotten used to it now. The thing with the F9, F10 and F11 keys is pretty nifty, Expose, I think it's called.

7. This is crucial advice. Do it. |

And you'll get used to OS X quickly. I *adore* it. I had some crashing problems with 9. OS X has not crashed or frozen once in nearly six months of using it. :D

then press and hold the "X" key while restarting the machine. Hold the "X" key until after you see the blue start up screen. Your system will then boot into OS X.
