2. I was watching it when it happened (altho the camera had panned away)
my guess is a Bush agent-provocateur. Anarchist-looking dudes with umbrellas, scarves and shades had surrounded the thing just before the flames erupted.

They would not be easily identifiable. Altho I did hear that someone was arrested at the time (1010 WINS newsradio)

4. Thanks
for the link (great story!) and the information. I liked the dragon, and am sorry it was burned.

7. The Dragon was trouble waiting to happen, Agent provocateurs, I'd bet
Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 05:49 PM by seventhson
my wife and daughter were in the crowd stuck behind the dragon (several blocks) but it was awkward and inane - not cool for the conditions. Itr was blocking the smooth flow of marchers and , except for its message, was really pissing me off - the path was too tight for such a thing (unless it is at the beginning or end of the march --- not smack dab in the middle.

The thing was dangerous to begin with.

But what kind orf an asshole sets a fire in the midst of women and children marching for peace. An Anarchist??? I doubt it - unless it was an exceptionally stupid and homicidal one.

THE NYC cops and FD handled it brilliantly. Cleaned the whole thing up inside of fifteen minutes and let the marchers move ahead. SOMEBODY made a good call to do that. They DID bring in a fire sniffing dog first.

But I could see the "anarchists" acting like they were up to something all covered up.

I am sure there was an agent provocateur among them.

It will be an interesting case to watch. It COULD have been a disaster/ But I have worked on such cases and I would bet dollars to donuts that this was a Rove plan which misfired. The fire did NOT cause a panic. Nobody got hurt. And the march proceeded thanks to the cool heads of the marchers AND the police and firefighters.

Rove lost this one big time. If the agent is turned ROVE could be indicted for attemtped murder IMHO.
