18. Meh - no need for ruination |
|
I smoked a pipe for awhile, and still have it. Problem was, I started smoking the pipe to stop smoking cigarettes, and found out that it was truly unsatisfactory for me unless I could INHALE the smoke. Since cigarettes = bad and pipe = unsatisfactory, I ended up settling for the good greens instead. Never looked back, never regretted it. And no unsightly lip cancers thus far!

6. I love my pipe and I'll never give it up! |
|
Someday I might stop smoking, but I love the pipe.
And I love smoking the pipe. I was at the store tonight and thought "Ooh, I need pipe tobacco so I can smoke again". But I was at a grocery store, so all they had was crap.
I like srong, meaty tobacco, that makes thick curls of smoke and has that strong tobacco smell.
Or else a medium, pleasant tasting one that doesn't fry my tongue.
I'm not much for the flavored stuff, though. Or the mild.
What kind of pipe did you get? I have a wonderful Severelli briar pipe, the best pipe I own. I bought it a few years ago, and I was blown away at how much better a good pipe is versus a cheap drugstore pipe. The difference is HUGE. I also have a meerschaum, though a cheaper one, but the taste and experience through a meerschaum is very different.
Mmmmmm, pipes. Love 'em!

Boy, is it great. I'm more of a 'christmas morning' or "chocolate mousse" or "checkmate" (spicy raisiny or chocolatey blends) grrrrl, and am primarily a cigar smoker, but pipes are fun for a change and I don't feel as bad as smoking inside cuz the smoke isn't as clingy as cigars. BUT...you really have to fuss with pipes alot more than cigars, and they kick out all kinds of sparks that burn wee holes in your clothes (of course, I do have some groovy smoking jackets!), and I find I burn my tongue from puffing too much to keep 'em lit. But I've got a nice touch in loading the tobacco, so it really does get a nice burn.
I gotta try a meerschaum sometime! I had no idea they were different to smoke through. Fascinating.

10. Meerschaums are VERY different |
|
Like smoking through a really good pipe for the first time was very different from the cheaper ones, smoking through a meerschaum is very different - as in, totally unlike. Almost like the smoke is filtered through a water pipe or something. Hard to describe, but it's very different.
I have had a few shirts get holes in them over the years...some day I need to buy me a smoking jacket, too.
What kind jacket do you have, and where did you get it?

17. I got a sort of goofy wintery one (looks like santa might wear it), but |
|
the cool one is vintage, from some kind of flea market in Toronto. We used to have vintage clothing stores around here loaded with them. I've seen great ones on ebay, too, but they can go for alot more than flea market ones. Groovy paisley's and such--I love 'em! But I always wanted to be a bachelor(ette) with groovy bachelor stuff---and now I've got lots of it!
Yeah, I pictured meerschaum as doing a cool smoke. Never smoked a waterpipe or anything, but I can imagine it I think.

I bought it at Eckerds on a whim.
The tobacco is cheap to, but I like it. Next time I'm gonna buy poison from a real smoke-shop... like the beautiful, sophisticated people do.

23. You'll do better with better tobacco |
|
Spend the money for good tobacco first.
Then later, once you're hooked, go buy a nice pipe.
Welcome to the world of pipe smoking!
There's also a usenet group for pipe smoking, and there used to be an IRC room for it. But I haven't been there in years, so have no idea if it still lives. Hell, I haven't been in IRC at all for probably four years.

Unfortunately, now that I'm a 30-something with no access to any sources of pot, it will be awhile before I do.

I've only used drug store quality pipes and tobacco, though, so I really don't know how much better a quality pipe and tobacco would be. I really enjoy what I've tried though. My favorite tobacco so far is Captain Black "Navy". Nice, smooth, thick smoke which bites the toungue softly and lingers for a few seconds in the air. I have a basic "canadian billiard" style "Dr. Grabo" pipe and it smokes well. I picked up a pipe tool some time ago and found it really makes smoking more fun and cleaner. One thing I found for sure though, tampening is a must to get a good clean, even burn.

21. I'm a vintage Dunhill pipe freak... |
|
I've got some nice ones - most recently acquired a 1937 long-stemmed sandblast shell billiard. It smokes like an absolute dream. The cool thing about Dunhill pipes, besides the fact that their hand-turned, is that they have specific date stamping on them, and you can always tell the year when the pipe was manufactured.
I'm lucky that I live near the original Tinder Box in Santa Monica. Their tobaccos are first rate and very tasty.
And remember -- a true pipe smoker never inhales -- tobacco, anyway.
