Should I get this dog?

I found an ad on Craigslist. Somebody local has to give up this beautiful 7-month old AKC registered English bulldog. Asking $750, which is pretty cheap for a bulldog. I've always wanted one of these guys, and and I've been considering getting a dog.

but that might have to go. He'd learn a new name quickly enough.

If I get him, I'm sure we'll have a poll here on what to name him.

The official dog of my family! We had a chance to own one a few months back, my sisters friends had a baby that turned out to be allergic to dogs...so they had to give it away, my dad has owned many boxers and was all for it....but it kept trying to eat the cat , so bye bye...stupid cat

My breed is cocker spaniels, but I have two little terriers. Both times, I answered ads about cockers, but ended up with a terrier. I don't find them, they find me. And mine also sleep on my bed. I don't know what I would do without them.

Little dogs that have no concept of size. Of course he's on the bed snoozin' too. My girl boxer thinks the terrier is her boyfriend. Good thing too because my boy boxer is her half brother :-) They're all fixed anyway but still, no incest allowed

27. My previous dog was a Cairn Terrier! I love them!
Is yours dark or light? Mine appeared dark, like Toto, until I got him washed, and he was a lovely gold color. He was so special to me and I still miss him terribly. He was 18 1/2 when I lost him, very suddenly, to kidney failure. I loved my little Rags. We used to watch "The Wizard of Oz" together. My Sara, who I adopted last fall, I was told was a Cairn Terrier, so I was immediately interested. I was called about a cocker spaniel up for adoption, but the woman who was fostering this dog decided to keep her, so she wouldn't be uprooted, yet again. But this woman, in rescue, said that she had a Cairn Terrier, if I was interested. She's not even close, but a very sweet dog. I just wish that I had a photo of Rags that I could post.:loveya:

And Meneken, who needed a companion, after we lost his sister, my cocker spaniel, Sheena, who he loved so much:

Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 02:16 AM by madmax
The reason I ask is that I had my Yorkie neutered and was terrified because my friend had a gorgeous Bulldog that he took to have neutered and it od'd on the table. Asked my vet for reassurances about my little guy and he said Bulldogs are somewhat more susceptible to od'ing during surgery.

But, he's a beauty boy and I would definately bring him home. He's young he'll learn a new name. Keep us posted

What a cutie! But I kind of cringe at spending $750, when there are numerous purebred dogs available for adoption at shelters and through numerous rescue groups, for little or no money. My purebred Brussels Griffon cost me nothing, because he was rescue, and these dogs can cost as much as $2000. I wasn't looking for one, but he found me, and I have since found out about the breed. I would suggest trying Petfinders, which is national and has every breed, but, if this dog has captured your heart, you will follow it.:-)

On edit: This is the website that I referred to. You can choose cats or dogs, birds or exotics, breed and location, since you want to find a pet that is available near you. Good luck and let us know.:-)

29. Do you know anything about raising a dog?
I wouldn't miss out on the puppy raising for anything. From 7 weeks old.

They are just so cute when they're babies, and good grief, I couldn't walk my pup down the street without cars stopping to gawk at him, mine (diff. breed) was so darn cute.

You need time and patience for a number of months to raise one from a pup, housebreak, obedience train and all, but that way you know he or she won't have any bad habits or neuroses from some rotten dog raiser. (Except you!)

Good luck with your new dog whenever you get one.

Remember, dogs live (hopefully) 8 to 16 years or so, depending on breed. It's a commitment.

30. If the cats say okay, sure! (But what about the raccoons and the possum?)
My brother was always a cat person, but his partner had a boxer -- when they finally moved in together, my brother got a chihuahua -- and he's nuts about that dog.

Guess what I'm saying is, if there's love enough to give this little guy a good life -- by all means, bring him on home!

Just go easy on the cats -- they will be pissed off at first at the "intruder."

36. I'm so sorry! But check out the website that I posted!
On Petfinder, you can find the breed that you want and those who are available closest to you. There are many purebred dogs, of all breeds, up for adoption. You might even find a dog that you like as much or better. And it will certainly cost you much less. I think that this is something that you want to do. Just make sure that the dog you choose is compatible with cats. They list this on the website. Let us know what you decide.:-)

37. You can virtually find any breed of dog or cat
in need of rescue on the internet for a fraction of $750.00. Or any other kind of critter for that matter. Some rescue places even have relay routes to get an animal from one state to an adoptive family in another state by everyday people volunteering their time, effort and money. Cuz they care:loveya:

38. My dog, Sara, was found as a stray in Ohio
She was taken to a horrible place, where they still gas them. But there is an "underground railroad" of the kind of folks that you are talking about, who take these animals to rescue organizations New York and Vermont, where they have tougher animal protection laws. A run of 19 dogs was set to go on the morning that Sara was scheduled to be gassed. The staff at this place thought that she was such a nice dog that they begged them to take just one more. And they found room for her. And so, I adopted Sara last fall, since my friend in animal rescue gave the woman that was seeking to place her my number. My little guy had been totally bereft since losing his "sister" in the spring. It's amazing the kindness and dedication that these people show. We should all be more like this. And, everyday, I am grateful for having found Sara. And she cost me only what I wanted to donate.:loveya:

39. aw
what a sweetie.

For those who keep pointing out adopting a stray, I'm aware of how to do that. I have three cats now, and have had two in the past that were all adopted from the SPCA. I had a dog adopted from the SPCA. I've never "bought" a dog or cat in my life.

But I can assure you all that pure-bred English Bulldogs are not often found at a small county-run animal shelter. They sell, usually, for between $2,000 and $5,000. This was a special opportunity, but I missed out. Somebody else got him first.

Thanks rhiannon, I will check out that website.

40. I checked it out, for you, and there are a few that you might be
interested in. As I said, there are many purebreds, these days, seeking homes. My little guy, a purebred Brussels Griffon, a $2000 dog, was threatened with euthaniasia twice, because his owner died and nobody wanted him. I found him just in time. All of my guys have been rescue, as well. I have adopted both cats and dogs in my life. I hope that this website is helpful, since I can tell that you're serious about this. My friend, in animal rescue, uses this website, so I know that it is a good one. I just hope for a happy ending for you and some lucky English Bulldog. If you have never seen him, here is my little guy, who needed another companion. He had never been an only dog and wasn't happy as one.;(

However you can adopt a dog without a home at your local animal shelter for 10 times less than that.

52. Just check out the dogs on Petfinder
They had several available in your area. And this site is updated, constantly. And you can also call local shelters, who may not participate in this, have them put you on a waiting list. I said that my vet's wife, who works with him, said that there is a list at our local SPCA shelter, looking for dogs as small as my little guy. All of my guys have found me, and not the other way around. I believe that this will also happen to you. I was looking for a cocker spaniel when I found both Sara and Meneken, but I wouldn't trade them for anything. You will find your English Bulldog.:-)

43. If you want a bulldog, go for it!
While this one is taken, there are plenty more dogs out there. I think you could do a lot better than $750, though. A dog that can command that price isn't going to be pound bound for lack of a home.

If you are thinking about a dog, you should probably look at your home, your schedule, etc. and see what sort of dog (size, hair, temperment, etc) is a good fit. Then you can find a reputable breeder, a rescue organization, or just check shelters for mixes with those characteristics.

I have a wonderful foster dog keeping my dog company; there are so many dogs out there who need a place to call home.
