prisoners breed red-back spiders for drug high !
Redback venom used as drug hit
September 7, 2004

NSW prison inmates kept deadly redback spiders to milk their venom and inject themselves for a hit.
The state opposition also revealed today that some other prisoners managed to cultivate a 40 centimetre marijuana plant in the grounds of another jail.

The four "pet" redbacks were discovered at Grafton prison on February 19 this year. Their venom had been milked and watered down to be injected for a high.

The marijuana plant was found at Long Bay jail four days later

2. Can we use Black Widows here?
I don't know about using Brown Recluses but I wonder if our laterodectus mactans is not a distant cousin of red-back spiders.

I wonder what properties the funnelweb may yield ?

3. is this a topic we need to discuss on DU?
seriously, I don't care what folks do in private but the last thing we need is a bunch of dolts going out and getting poisonous spiders to inject the venom (yes I know, it's watered down - but imagine if someone didn't fix that properly)

Personally - I recommend that the mods delete this whole section of replies. Usually when I'm joking I put the eyes rolling in here so folks don't think I'm some sort of whack job and jump down my throat (kinda what I did to you)

6. No kidding
It,s bad enough already, here we have kids picking mushrooms, making tea out of Jimson Weed, digging up endangered cactus. Good thing we don't have any toads for them to lick.

How's Abbott?

10. Abbott is doing well - he sends his love
and thank you for your response. Young folks will try anything they think that can get them high (heck I went to a HS where sniffing gasoline was the highlight of a party :eyes: ).

skooo, I'm not trying to pass judgement but instead ask that we use good judgement. I don't know if you notice this but there are plenty of folks who enjoy recreational use of drugs but also rarely post what they use here at DU because
1.) it's no one elses business
2.) this is a public website and not limited to those over 18 - do you think a mother who finds out their underage kid is visiting a web site where we talk about injecting spider venom is going to be thrilled to have her kid reading the site.
3.) we are not alone - personally if I was doing drugs; even the most recreational harmless stuff, I don't want documented record on a website for the feds to keep track.

it's just common sense.

21. I guess its a judgement call
but the whole thing strikes me as so patently strange that I am both fascinated by the idea and skeptical that anyone with common sense would ever actually try it.

You will note these are incarcerated inmates. What part of the bell shaped curve are we talking about? And it is trivial - granted. I suppose you'd find this kind of thing on the Darwan Awards web site. But if there is a posting I think is funny or intreaguing I may want to respond to it.

What do the mods think?

Since I am cleaning house, I will keep an extra look out for spiders.

24. well here's a question.
given the small size of the venom sacs, how does one go about harvesting the venom with out having access to some fairly specialized lab equipment?

I do realize this is a joke. hopefully. but either the critters are made to bite through a membrane into a vessel or ... we disect them and remove the venom sacs ?

with out microscopes and the right tools, who would be able to do it?

And I would think a sterile environment is needed to avoid contamination.
I would want to test it too for purity and stregnth.

25. You'd need a REALLY small syringe...

Because you would just want to extract the venom without harming the spider. I imagine the underground literature on spider care is also proliferating in the prisons.

Not sure how concerned they are about purity...you take your chances, you know. But if you are getting the venom second-hand, you can bet it would be cut with water or apple spider or something.

26. hypothetically speaking
if someone were able to catch a few our variant of the Red Back...would some one else know where there could be a demand for them alive? I am willing to bet that the neruo toxic venom of the laterodectus mactans could be diluted to a sefe level.

Our spiders may be more potent, a better high? I know the spiders in the article are brave little arachnids, but how do they compare with the ones from Texas ?

Lots of bad and powerful things hale from here. Look at the current un elected president. A lazy but dangerous species if ever there was.

We want to avoid the Columbian Spider Lords who have no scruples against harming arachnids for material gain.

Maybe swallowing spiders in capsules can get them through customs... a litte ice cold apple spider helps them go down easier.

could be lucrative.

Am I pushing the envelope here ?

4. Not sure...

...I don't sell the spiders, or raise them. Red backs won't kill you if you get bit, the "poisonous" label is just a scare tactic.

Funnelweb...funnelweb...that's a good question, not sure about that. Have you looked in Google?

16. Not being an entymologist
and certainly no expert on arachnids, I would be very cautious about the venom.
Some of these are neruotoxic.

All the same, I think this is a good time for a glass of ice cold apple spider.

23. Well, they don't drug test for that
Some people will do anything for a high. Some people who would be content with marijuana are using more dangerous drugs, including ones that aren't recognized as drugs, in this case spider venom, to avoid failing a drug test. Then there's the whole illegal aspect. You won't be arrested for possessing spiders or a number of other psychoactive substances that haven't been made illegal yet, but are just as or more dangerous than hard drugs.

27. Can you imagine being busted for spider possession?
I can see it now. Just because they are on my property does not mean I get off with a warning.

I will be sure to hide my face from the video cameras as I am led to the waiting squad car. Of course this will be devestating to a whole generation of kids who used to admire spider man only to find out he is a purveyor of spider trips.
