I'm in the worst place ever for left-over "Frances."
We are getting pounded tonight in the mountains parallel to the NC/SC border. I am on a south-facing side of the mountain on the "dirty" side of a tropical depression that is moving slowly north through Atlanta right now. The counter-clockwise flow is forecast to kick-my-ass tonight (near hurricane they say). I have already had over 6-inches of rain. They are forecasting another 12-inches in the next 24-hours.

The wind is picking up and howling. I look down (to the SSW) a perfect Venturi tube. Fluid physicist (and pilots) know what that tube is doing to the roaring outer-band winds of erstwhile Hurricane Frances. The center now is calm (just passed over my parents' house in Griffin, Georgia). But the center cannot hold; the energy is in the outer bands. Thus the roar outside.

(More later .. maybe)

1. Try not to slide down the hill...
6 inches is a lot of water to drain from mountain hillsides.

5. You know my voting address is Greenville, eh?
I have a little condo in G'ville. Downtown. We had a great Democratic fund-raiser at "O" (downtown) on 8/30. I had dinner last night with the woman who had the great LTTE in Saturday's Greenville Grunt, a good left-wing neighbor she is! In fact, Dr. D. is in Greenville right now. I am in western Transylvania County, NC. The same line that is kicking my ass is moving in on Greenville right now. Duck and cover! (9:40 pm)

3. Emailed a friend who has lived in the Clearwater area all her life.
More than 60 years (she is a bit older than I ;)) She said that between Charley and Frances, she has never seen so much hurricane damage.

Fortunately, her condo (somewhat inland, and on a canal and not the waterfront) is fine, just lost power for 36 hours after a major Labor Day weekend grocery shopping trip.

Hope you are okay, DemoTex. A beautiful cool (bordering on chilly) evening in Chicago. Cubs leading the Expos 3 - 2.

7. This is crazy weather this year
south of me in Richmond they had a tropical storm that leveled the downtown of Richmond and cost 8 people their lives. This was a ho-hum tropical storm; not the hyped hurricanes we've seen this past week.

What does this tell us? A few years back floods decimated towns along the Mississippi. Every year in Old Town Alexandria, some of the most expensive-ass real estate in the states, there are floods and retail owners sand bag like hell and hold their breath.

Flash floods destroy little river towns in West Virginia and take lives - that's been a given for over forty years, since they destroyed the topsoil with mining.

Venice, the jewel of Europe slowly goes further into the water every year.

Countless thousands lose their lives in Bangladesh floods every year.

When will we wake up to the devasting effects of global warming?

8. probably the same time the Bush "scientists "
discover that gravity does not in fact exist, and we are held to this mortal coil by the sheer burden of his horseshit.

9. Sorry, I'm soaked now. Had to switch on the generator.
I'm now on generator power. Just like an aircraft's "emergency bus," I've switched over to "essential." S/O's, "Protect Essential!"

I've got a few lights, a computer, two freezers and a refidge, and the well-pump on the essential buss. No big deal, when you plan ahead.
