My stepfather just passed away |
|
He was at Stage 3 Alzheimer's, and wasn't in good shape physically. He and my mother were married for 36 years. He loved wood carving and birdwatching. He was a hunter, but only for meat, not for trophies. He was a conservative, and he and I made a deal decades ago never to talk about Kent State. Mom has been really worried lately because health care costs were taking away their life savings. She's voting Kerry this November. I know my thoughts are scattered; forgive me. Even though one knows something like this is going to happen, it is still a shock when it does.
Thanks for listening....just writing this helps.

I know a thing or two about watching someone you love go slowly...it's tough, because you don't want their suffering to continue, but you don't want to lose them, either.
I know this is a painful time, but my thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Even though you know it's coming, you don't know how to react to it once it happens. I know what you're going through now, as my dad also passed away before his time. My thoughts are with you.

My grandfather passed away in 95, and he too suffered from the effects of Alzheimer's. How I wished in the final moments of his life that he had remembered everything he had ever given to me.

It's hard to lose your dad -- I lost mine before his time, too. No doubt you know this, and I'm not trying to be patronizing, but your mother will need you -- my parents had been together 47 years, my mother never even dated another guy seriously before they married. Take care and be there for her.

He sounds like an interesting man. It is almost impossible to "be prepared," even with warning (at least, that is my experience). I hope you will remember the things you're telling us about as you help your mother deal with her loss -- you seem to care about the man he was. You and your mother have my sympathy.

It seems to me that the great tragedy of Alzheimers is that you lose your loved ones and then they die too. You can never be prepared.

My condolences to you and your mother and other family. It is always tough to lose a loved one, but it sounds like he was suffering for quite a while. I don't know about your mother, but many people start the grieving process when their loved one has a debilitating, terminal illness. Regardless, be there for each other.

Alzheimer's is the worst, and he probably left you long ago. My grandmother was terrified of getting Alzheimer's and even joined a support group, though she was the only one in it who was not caring for someone with the disease. When she hit 90, I told her that I thought she was pretty safe, from what I had read on the subject. She never got it, of course. I am sharing in your grief, since it was six years ago, today, that we had her funeral. September 13th was also her birthday. My thoughts are still with you. I understand, since I still really miss my Nana.;(

while they live, hope exists that they might somehow survive. And with death, the agony ends. Such mixed feelings must be going on within you. I'm so sorry he is finally gone from you.
