I can tell you this is not a joke. There is a fairly large contingent of fangirls (and fanboys) for various shows who appreciate fiction and artwork depicting same-sex pairings. The Kirk/Spock relationship really helped start the phenomenon but now it exists for just about any book, tv show, or movie you can think of. I myself webhost several "slash" sites.
