What was the last song that made you go 'goddam, this is great'? |
|
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 12:12 AM by jpgray
For me it's the Dovers' 'What Am I Going to Do?' Weird, sort of elegiac jangly 12-string pop with great personality in the vocals. Just a strangely powerful and deep song for me.

The one that asks how "you will go about making your amends to the dead"? Think that one was written with Shrub in mind ...

10. "Jerusalem" by Steve Earle |
|
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 12:19 AM by 5thGenDemocrat
I listen to absolutely zero radio, though I have a huge tape/CD/album collection (part of which you can see behind me if you look REAL close at my avatar), which has every song ever made through, like, 1991. But anything that's been recorded since Clinton's first inauguration comes to me through friends' recommendations or, more rarely, from the TeeWee. John Anyhow, I saw Steve Earle one night on Letterman. And, it turns out, he was born in 1955 in the base hospital at Fort Monroe, Virginia -- where I'd find myself serving out my Army enlistment some twenty years later. Small world.

Yes, I've heard it many a times before, but I listened to it tonight and it's got this energy/mystery/haunting appeal to it. It's hard to explain, but it puts me in a trance.

20. On the Radio, the Most Recently Released Would be |
|
"Pinch me" by Barknaked Ladies. It's a masterful description of quiet longing expressed in a very indirect way.
Most recently purchased would probably be "Everything Must Go" on the new Steely Dan. They still use amazing jazz sidemen and their lyrics are still full of colorful sleazy losers.

21. A bunch of stuff lately. |
|
Mostly thanks to my local library.
I checked out a bunch of CD's a while back and I was impressed with most of the ones that are by artists I've never heard of before but looked interesting. One is a CD entitled "Something Different Than These Changes" by an artist called Stew. Another one I think is pretty good is "Talkie Walkie" by a band called Air. Also, I managed to get a copy of Dream Theater's "Train of Thought", which I seriously need to buy.

While I'm not a real Korn fan, I heard it live when they played the Shoreline recently and I was enthralled. I didn't care much for the vocals but the guitars got my blood going nicely.
