And I hate him because the rich cool kids at my school liked him. Doesn't that really piss you off that I hate such a great musical icon for a complete non-reason? What sort of petty bastard am I? Bwaahaahaahaa!
What really petty, weak reasons do you have for hating sacred cows?

Blame those damn kids. I've never been into Bob M. myself, but I never understood why people will abandon a certain artist or group after they discover that another bunch of different kids like that group too. Just enjoy it :)

|
Just me, I guess. I always thought the Pogue's popularity was based on Shane McGowan's odd charisma/persona, because their music was tired folk cliches amplified.
Anyhow, that's just me. I know I'm the one with the problem.

I think Shane is/was pretty entertaining, generally, well, maybe with the exception of him and the Popes.
But folk cliches fuel a lot of Irish festivals. I know cuz I just went to one recently. I really like the more traditional stuff, there was a neat band who dressed in Civil War gear and did a lot of historical songs from that period.

you would think some of them would leave the dark side permanently after some of those types of experiences. Some of my late 70s punk/ cronies became lawyers/busines types and moved to the upscale part of town. Most of them are still liberal dems, though.
However, I myself have remained pretty liberal and pretty underfunded. We are not well-off, but comfortable and we drive Saturns. I will never make a bundle in community mental health, and that's okay. And generally I sleep well and can look at myself in the morning.

But it was co-opted by rich white kids years ago (myself included. I don't dress all Jamaican or listen to it all the time, I just like the sound and the political messages).
Too bad all those white kids don't know about Rastafarianism; the history of the music and the struggle to throw off white colonial powers in Africa.

40. Elvis Presley annoys me. |
|
It doesn't rise to any sort of level of hatred. There are even a few songs I like. And I understand and respect his contributions to the musical world, and realize without him we wouldn't have many of the artists and genres we do to day.
But that doesn't mean I have to go ga-ga over his music. Or his schtick, or the legions of impersonators he spawned.
In fact, I'm pretty sure it was the "what do you mean you don't like this? It's Elvis! Are you crazy?" I got growing up (and would get now if I said so) when I complained about one song or another that prejudiced me against the rest of his stuff. Tell me I'm supposed to like something because, well, I'm supposed to, and I probably won't.

Save for dub-influenced rock like Can, early PIL, "Guns of Brixton" and suchlike. Oh, and some actual dub is A-OK with me, too. But fuck Marley.
As for petty reasons to hate icons, I always hated Led Zeppelin in high school because that was the band of choice of the older brothers of the guys who kicked my ass all over the school. Now that I've actually given them a chance, I only hate about 3/4 of their stuff.
