Why are there so many pricks at the DMV?
Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 11:56 PM by messiertom
Today (the 24th of September) is my 16th birthday. So I went to the DMV (in Deerfield, IL, immediately after school to get my driver's license.

I got all of my paperwork in order, submitted it, and waited for the driving tester to call my name. After about a 35 minute wait (fairly short), my name was called and I took him out to my car.

The instructor was an old man, maybe about 60 or 65, dressed in a cheesy camp shirt and dockers. He had a pair of thick glasses and was balding badly.

Throughout the whole test, he would yell at me for little things (I took one hand off the wheel one time for a second or two while making a tight turn because sometimes it's easier). He would threaten to fail me every thirty seconds. I somehow managed to pass the test despite my "reckless speed" (10 mph) through an empty parking lot.

I'm certain none of you will be surprised by this next part. As he walked away from the car back to the DMV building, I heard him mutter "I should've failed that filthy hippie" (I have medium-longish hair) under his breath. I was right behind him, and there was no way he could've thought I didn't hear him.

I wanted to get my license right then and there rather than have to come back next week to do it, so I avoided confrontation.

I think this guy may be the biggest jerkoff asshole I've ever met in person my whole life.

edit: forgot to spellcheck

1. Job requirement. It's the first place financially cut and they are over
worked.

2. There will be many more ...
... a-holes you will meet in your life. If you have your license, I would suggest writing a letter of complaint (be nice and enlightening) to your DMV.

3. You handled it wrong...
You should have looked over at him and done one of the following things:

1. Screamed, "Don't make me turn this car around, young man! Because I will and then I'll tan your little hiney!"

2. Told him matter-of-factly with just a little bit of craziness in your eyes, "Make sure you're buckled in really well. I want to try some things I've seen in cartoons."

4. They get so many crazy rules that they can't cope
sometimes. Usually, the smarter ones get jobs elsewhere.

5. Pricks need jobs, too.
That is the best job for a prick.

6. Intolerant bigoted assclowns make me sick
probably a republican. Though not necessarily.

Still, it's just damned stupid to think that someone with long hair is a "filthy hippie" and further worse to think they are worthy of scorn. A mullet with a NASCAR belt buckle and a few teeth missing and a wife-beater t-shirt at a funeral, yes. But not just for lnog hair.

If it's any consolation, I've never cared if the kids in my youth groups have long hair, blue hair, short hair, or pageant contestant hair (and I did have two Miss America contestants at one church).

And congratulations on getting your license!!

7. haha, good story
I am 17 so I went through that hell a year ago in Santa Ana, CA. I failed once, I won't go into the bullshit they pulled, but it was overall a terrible experience. The DMV employees must be seriously underpayed because they move around like they are are walking through a swimming pool full of gelatin.

9. Most of them are.
Because they have the authority to pass or fail people, it goes to their big arrogant head. As if giving people driver's license tests is a very in depth job.

10. Some people mistreat young people, doesn't matter where

they work. Eventually you'll be old enough that you'll no longer attract the attention of these misguided people. Sad, but true.

Being male, and presumably white, you'll avoid a lot of the world's other idiots altogether. But you'll still meet a lot of assholes in life. Sorry to have to break it to you on your birthday but you're old enough to know the truth.

Hope you had a happy 16th birthday otherwise!

11. Congratulations on passing -- I got my license at that same office, 13
years ago. (The guy who tested me was overly polite, but everyone else was pretty well obnoxious.)

The people at the Waukesha, WI DMV are much nicer, if it's any consolation. I was in and out in 10 minutes for a renewal this year.

And happy birthday!
