47. Sadly, Vagabond no longer exists as a brick-and-mortar entity...
However, they are alive and well online:
http://www.vagabondbooks.com.futuresite.register.com/

My bookshelves are heavily weighted with books purchased from Vagabond over the years, at two locations (first Westwood, then Brentwood), and now virtually.

20. A Capella Books in Atlanta GA.
Everything from signed firsts (especially from the Beats like Burroughs, Ginsberg and Kerouac) to rare and out-of-print titles as well as a good selection of current literary fiction, serious social sciences and hard science, criticism, history, art and architecture, food and wine, religion and spirituality, ethnic and women's studies...it's the only bookstore I can think of where I'd probably want to buy everything on the shelves (if I could afford it).

42. When I lived in Tampa
(1970-2000) would go over to Haslam's about once a year and spend most of the day. Loved that place !! Spent a little time in Colorado Springs in eary '80's and went to the Chinook. Here in Ama we have a used bookstore called, well, "The Bookstore." The owner recently took over part of the old Nat Ballroom in the historic district. Great place to find treasures at good prices.

Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 11:27 AM by ikojo
It's the only independent bookstore in the city of St Louis. It's in the Central West End and they have hosted some pretty good authors including Kevin Phillips.

I should add that Left Bank Books is collectively owned.

Although Berkelely has three great book stores in a three block radius near the university: Cody's, Moe's and Shakespeare's (I'm assuming these are all still around, it's been a long time since I was there).

48. Moe's remodeled completely back around 1980
It became a huge, multilevel place, not quite the dusty curiosity shop it once was but still a great book store. I'd be very surprised if it's gone.

I forgot another good one, very near Moe's: Shamballah, specializing in spirituality, history, new age, etc. Small but extremely well-stocked.

I need to get back to Bay Area for a visit, it's been way too long.

46. Quail Corners Books and Borders Books in Raleigh, NC...Quail and Borders
support Dem Books and offer up their stores for political debate and have all the better authors coming to talk about their books.

Quail Corners has great International Mystery section and Borders has hosted all our Dem political candidates for "Town Hall Meetings" and has had open Forums with Repug and Dems who are running. They give us "Meeting Space." One does have to deal with being near the Loud Hissing of the Cappichino machine during the talks...which can be offputting...but hey it beats standing on a streetcorner.
