Just sat down and watched the new "Apocaypse Now" with added scenes! |
|
For the most part, one can see why the scenes were cut in the first place, especially given the final version of the movie is 3 and 1/2 hous long!
But ye Gods, the French Plantation scenes! I don't know if such a thing was historically accurate (could a French Plantation survive in N. Vietnam like that for so long?), but how POWERFUL!
The crazy Dien Bien Phu soldier (at least, he spoke in the 'we' when speaking of the French soldiers) with his accordion. The conversation and back and forth! The talk of the origins of the Viet Cong (Minh?) with Roosevlt/Truman foreign policy to chase the French out of Indochina, sort of Vietnamese Bin Laden. I wonder if that's true.
In either case, what a tour de force!
And the poignant funeral of Mr. Clean...
wow.

I loved the plantation scene, but my favorite restored bit was the crew finding the camp with no leader where the Playboy bunnies were stranded, and had all gone insane.
That was one of the creepiest bits in the whole film.

2. I've got to see that.......... |

I loved the original and this sounds even better.
If I remember correctly, Ho Chi Mihn wrote to Truman two or three times during 1945 asking for assistance in setting French Indo-China up as a democracy. Apparently, Ho was a big fan of Abraham Lincoln. His letters and pleas went unanswered because of the US committment to France. Sooooooo.....he fought the French from about 1946 to the Battle of Bien Dien Phu in 1957.
My history may be a little rusty, but other DUers are cordially invited to correct any errors I've made.

4. Ho quoted Jefferson when he declared Independence and |
|
after his speech, he was congratulated by the American observers. However, the U.S. choose to support France because the US needed to overcome French objections to re-militarizing West Germany and putting nukes there. We hopped into bed with the French for concerns in Europe, sacrificing SE Asia. Ho realized to get necesary funds, he would have to support Marxist positions. He switched and America's longest war followed.

I knew that the US sided with the French but the reasons were fuzzy....

Dien Bien Phu was in 1954(although it began in November 1953).

Apparently Discovery Wings Channel has a documentary coming up in October about CIA involvement in Dien Bien Phu...should be interesting.

The original, as a whole, was much better. The added scenes changed the movie for me. For one thing, it changed the Capt. Willard character. Not that that is necessarily bad but he comes off a bit different in the new scenes. I loved the original so much, I guess any modification was just "messing with success".

It is a shame that the disc does not give you the option of viewng the movie in the original.
