Most Unforgettable SNL Moments? |
|
Okay, folks, if you’re watching E!'s "101 Most Unforgettable SNL Moments," some of you might feel cheated by E! for combining a series of skits into one "moment," overlooking the musical acts, or glossing over SNL's more infamous or embarrassing moments. This is the thread where you can help set things right!
Maybe your most unforgettable moment from Saturday Night Live is the ad for the Royal Deluxe II, where a rabbi demonstrated the car’s handling by performing a circumcision in the back seat. Or maybe it’s the performance by Sinead O'Connor where she tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II. Or perhaps it’s John Belushi's "cheeburger cheeburger cheeburger" restaurant skit. Or Lorne Michaels asking Rudy Giuliani "Can we be funny?" in the first show after 9/11. Or Molly Shannon as "Mary Catherine Gallagher" getting a little too frisky with Jeff Goldblum. Or Charles Rocket's parting words at the end of a show that got Jean Doumanian fired. Or Fear's no-holds-barred chaos fest during the Dick Ebersol regime. Do you get the idea yet?
I wanna hear yours. Maybe I can compile them and publish a list of DU's 50 unforgettable SNL moments just for fun. So get typing, already!

I swear, in my mind's eye, there was no cut between the bass-o-matic pulping the bass, and Dan Akroyd taking a drink. Alas, upon reviewing it, there is a cut, but it's still a classic...

7. The one right before the 2000 election |
|
where they showed Bush (Will Ferrell) sitting in the Oval Office with bombs and planes all over DC while he has a stupid grin on his face. They won't show it now.
Also, one where Phil Hartman played Susan Lucci's husband and she was having some luggage problem and they were at a customer service desk. They gave some long explanation of what happened and he stood there with a really dumb look on his face and then said, "So. What are you saying?"
Also, the Delicious Dish episodes with Alec Baldwin.
And the Sweeney Sisters!

Cawfee Tawk with Roseanne Barr, Madonna and a TRULY surprise walk-on by Barbra Streisand.
Garrett Morris doing "news for the hearing impaired" by SCREAMING whatever Chevy Chase just said.
But my most personal favorite was in '79, I think. David Bowie was the musical guest. My mother had been "worried" for years that I was so into Bowie. But he had spent years doing "Thin White Duke" and always wore suits, so I called my Mom and told her to watch SNL that night to see what Bowie was like now (or then). Son of a bitch comes out in a dress. 30 seconds my later my phone is ringing and Mom's swearing like a trucker with Tourette's.

Funny skit too.
I liked the schmidt's gay commercial set to the tune of some Van Halen song (beautiful girl?). Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer with Phil Hartman was funny. I also liked the episode of Wayne's World where Wayne dreams he is playing Truth or Dare with Madonna.

Well, first of all, that whole show was great (loved Sir Ian as Yves Saint Laurent in the Donatella Versace recurring skit with Maya Rudolph as Donatella. :-))
But the unforgettable moment in that show for me was Weekend Update...and Sir Ian as Dame Maggie Smith...at one point kissing, full mouth, Jimmy Fallon. It was just...so cool. :-)

25. Bush's Bin Laden speech! |
|
I tend to forget the earlier ones, though I have been watching for almost 10 years...
Good evening, America. I'd like to address my remarks tonight to Mr. Osama bin Laden. Buddy, you screwed up big time. Guess what, Amigo. I'm coming to get you. I'm not alone, either. The American people are right behind me. You see, you made a big mistake. If you had any brains, you would have challenged me to a game of Scrabble. Or maybe a Beard-Off. You might have won that because I don't have a beard. And when I do, it comes in patchy. But no, you messed up. Because if there's one thing I'm good at, it's punishing evil-doers. You don't believe me, there's over 200 guys in Texas you can ask. Well... you can't ask them right now, but you'll have a chance real soon. And I'm sorry I wasn't there to see your face when you went to the Kabul ATM to get some Quick-Cash. I bet it said "Insufficient Funds". That's right - we froze your assets. It probably ate your card, too. Make no mistake: we're coming for you, bin Laden. I'm gonna make you my own personal "Where's Waldo". And unlike those frustrating Waldo books, I'm gonna find you. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but maybe tomorrow. There might be special operatives outside your cave right now, who knows? Just remember, I'll see you real soon. Because you violated rule Numero Uno: You messed with Texas. That's right. Don't mess with Texas.

|
The Rolling Stones singing and playing, all in their own choice of key and tempo....
Elvis Costello deciding to do a different song at the last minute which screwed up all the camera angles and lighting and they practically threw him off the show right then and there...
Rickie Lee Jones high as a kite wandering off stage in the middle of a song....
Plus one of my favorites -
Eddie Murphey as Buckwheat singing "Wookin Pa Nub" and other hits....

All these spaced out druggies, Zappa kept telling them he didn't do drugs, which of course nobody believed (although it really was true).
I also enjoyed the 'killer Christmas trees' sketch, which he was also in. In a film I worked on in college, I made a parody of that sketch with 'the killer pot plants.' Two of my fellow stoners dressed up as the pot plants and "killed" two of the most straight-laced kids around (both of whom I 'conned' into being in the sketch). LOL
Oh, and we can't forget the 'land shark.' "Candy-Gram"
