Sigh. Came home for lunch and my neighbor was sitting out on the steps w/ her dog. Said her apt had been ransacked. Went downstairs to mine and yep, same thing. Turns out every apt in my building was gone thru.
Thankfully my dog wasn't harmed. I'm not big on material things, but the few pieces of my mom's jewelry that I was saving for my daughter are gone. :(
I feel like I need to wash everything, and I don't want to be here anymore.
What a horrible day. Sigh.

Check with local pawn shops... you might find it. Perhaps you might consider a safety deposit box... they're good for that sort of thing.
I hope you find it... and that you feel better soon...

I have never been through it, but it must be an awful feeling.
Are you filing a police report? How could someone go through every apartment in a building without getting caught? Do you think it was an inside job?

I don't blame you for wanting to clean. I hope you made a police report and described the jewelry.
If you're into mystical things, I'd suggest burning cedar and sage to help cleanse the atmosphere.

11. That is absolutely terrible |
|
When I was in my twenties, my apartment was robbed twice--once in Alabama and then in Houston. I felt absolutely violated.
I was surprised by how it affected me. So I think I know how you feel. I have no advice, only that time will change things a bit. And that after this, you will always be more careful.
One more thing. After I was robbed in Houston, the ownership put a double deadbolt lock on the door. Contact the owner and see what they will do. They have some responsibility to provide reasonable security, an apt that is reasonably safe. And yours is not.

They were determined to smash-n-grab ... since I'm on the ground floor I have 'charlie bars' on my patio door and bedroom window.
They just busted in the front door(s), cop style.

...I was burglarized about 6 months ago. I alternated between feelings of rage and feelings of violation. I wanted to crack some skulls.
What's worse is that they took a lot of music that i had written and recorded...most of it was not committed to memory...so it can't be replaced. I can replace all the other stuff they took....but not those tapes...

it is an awful feeling. It is cathartic to wash everything and even re-arrange your furniture. At least the dog is OK. That's my biggest fear if I were ever robbed. I fear the robbers would hurt the pets or let them loose. They can have everything else, just don't hurt the fur babies!
Take care of yourself!

The 'things' they took are almost inconsequential, except that they were the only tangible reminders I have of my mom who died when I was 17 ...
What really freaks me out is that someone was in my space and could have hurt or killed my best pal.

I'm sure the stuff's all at a pawn shop somewhere in town ... pissy thing about it is, of the 5 pieces they took - only 2 were real gold. The other 3 were plated, probably worth about $1.50 total.

Did you talk to the police? If so, who called them? Did they give you a report number and contact card? Did they process the scene for latent prints? Did they determine point of entry/exit?
Believe it or not, moving is quite common and quite therapeutic to those who've gone through what you've gone through.
Sorry it happened. I know it sucks.

My upstairs neighbor had called the police before I got home and saw my apt ... by the time the cop got there, mgmt had arrived and they all went in the other 2 units in the bldg and saw they were ransacked too.
Nobody took prints (which amazes me) and he's not sure about which was hit first, but all of our front doorjambs were broken ... the thieves took the time to close the doors as much as possible on their way out - for what reason, I don't know ...

35. When I bought my ground floor condo |
|
I got a security system. I just felt better being a woman alone having it. I'm not going to be sorry, even though there is big debt on my credit card for doing it, and I don't really have anything much worth stealing except a pretty good stereo/TV. Just the thought of someone rummaging through my stuff and scaring my cats would make me sick. Now the security system has an alarm that goes directly to the police station and is also loud as hell. Perhaps you could look into something like that.

36. Important things: 1) You're okay; 2) Your dog's okay... |
|
If every apt. in the building was ransacked, it was clearly done by someone who had a pass key, or who knew the building, if entry was forced.
Make sure your manager changes everybody's locks. I sincerely doubt that whoever did this will ever be coming back -- they're long gone, and on to other things.
So very sorry about the family pieces that were lost -- but in the larger scheme of things...(you probably know where I'm going).
If you find that you're really troubled by the break-in, please agree to get some counseling. It could get you over a hump if, say, this incident triggers a depression, etc.
Hang in there -- you have your neighbors for support -- they've all shared in a common trauma.
Best to you, HC --

The doors were kicked in, but yeah whoever it was knew all 4 of our schedules. :(
Thing that worries me is that now they were in here, they know what else we have that might be worth something and come back some other time (tv's, dvd players, checks, etc wasn't touched ... only what they could stuff in their pockets, apparently) and try to score bigger.

47. My best guess -- they took exactly what they wanted, and are long gone... |
|
Probably tough to fence things like TVs, dvd players, etc. now, and not worth the burglar's time.
All true burglars want no contact with any residents -- they want in, and **out**, fast.
Years ago, my dad was staying alone in a condo in Palm Desert -- while he was sleeping, some burglars forced the sliding-glass door, took some appliances and small stuff, and totally ignored $1200 in cash (in an envelope, given to my dad by a neighbor for mortgage payments). They took some potato chips, also, but left the bag (?).
They never woke my dad. When he got up in the morning, he noticed a few things out of place, and missing. It was a ring operating inside the condo community. Never caught them.
I think that the guys who broke into your complex didn't even have time to "take inventory" -- they just grabbed what they could, and scrammed.
Hang in there --
