2. My friend/kid next door is in Jinan right now

But that's several hundred miles from Beijing. He's having a pretty good time teaching English at Jinan Polytechnical, though he got restricted to the campus for a few weeks at the peak of the SARS outbreak. He's also been to the birthplace of Confucius (not far from Jinan) and to The Wall.
According to an email I got a couple days ago, he's also been to the beach with one very pretty Japanese gal (and kindly sent photos along). If you have half as much fun as Johnny, well, you're going to have a lot of fun.
