Should I get an iPod?
I commute on the train... I like to listen to a variety of musical genres and I don't want to shuffle CDs.... On the other hand, the iPod is quite pricey in my opinion ($250????)

Also, if you live in NYC, what is the cheapest place to purchase it? The Apple store or J&R or...?

Any helpful tips are appreciated.

1. I'm not all that tech savvy, but my partner knows everything
about tech stuff. He swears by his iPod. He absolutely LOVES it!

2. Yes, definitely, get one.
User friendly, fabulous sound - I take mine everywhere.

I even use mine for meditation before I go to sleep at night.

Check out Macprices.com.

3. 1. Yes 2. It is not that pricey compared to similar products
You will really like it - it is great to use.

And compared to similar large storage Hard Disk based products (20 gig or more), it is competitively priced. But the OS and experience are head and shoulders above anything else out there. . .

4. YES get an iPod..you don't have to be all that tech savvy
to use it. Like most Apple products (the Mac) it is intuitive. I just plug mine into my beloved Mac and it does the rest.

5. Get a PDA instead
Between $250 and $400, you'll get a lot more for your money.

Unless you could care less for the things a PDA can do. As I have ADD (and no partner  ), I've found a PDA to be eminently effective for my needs.

I think I went about 15 months straight using it every single day.

7. Yes, go for it.
You will not be disappointed; it's a great companion for traveling. Very easy to load and use.

I recommend looking at the 3rd generation 30/40 GB refurbished units on the Apple website. They are great values, and I prefer the 3rd gen to the current version with the click wheel functions.

8. Yes, but wait...
I LOVE my iPod...makes CDs obsolete. I always have my iPod in the car, ready to go....

But wait til Xmas! Word is that a new 60G color iPod is on the way for $500. About a $100 or so more than you pat now but you get sooo much more.

9. Is the classical music selection good?
I've been toying with getting an iPod too. I only listen to classical music (and not the easy-listening Vivaldi-all-day variety). Is there a list of music they offer that one can browse online before you buy?

13. iTunes library
You can download and use it.

Basically you rip your CDs onto your library using mp3s. Then you plug in your iPod and it downloads it almost immediately.

I have everything from Wagner to Cher to Ravel to Alice in Chains on mine.

14. You have to download iTunes and go to their store
You have to download and install iTunes then go to their(Apple's) online store and browse around for yourself.

iTunes will also rip your CD's to disk too, so you don't have to buy any music from Apple If you don't want/need to.

That's all free.

12. If you can afford it.
But get the 20GB - I broke 4GB pretty quickly. But yeah, I like having an iPod as a car stereo for public transportation!

I've owned every version since the original iPod with only 5GB's of storage.

16. I've never been a fan of the iPod or Apple in general.
Sure it looks great and all, but ther are certain features that Apple could have easily included but didn't, and I thik that's just a slap to the face to people like me who would want said features.

Personally I'd probably go for an iRiver or maybe Rio Karma, but that's just me.

If Apple was to ever incorporate gapless OGG playback and built in mic and line-in recording capabilities (the two main features they should have included), I'd gladly buy and tell others to buy an iPod. However, right now, I can't do that.

But whatever you do, don't buy an iPod Mini. Those things are so pointless.

17. Oh My GOD, WRONG WRONG WRONG!
Edited on Sun Oct-17-04 01:25 PM by The Nation
do NOT listen to this man, listen to the COLLECTIVE wisdom!

The iPod is the greatest mp3 player out there period. END OF STORY.

No iRiver or Rio crap is going to make you happy. Everyone knows iPod is the best and that's that.

And ps, I just bought an iPod mini, and I know a lot of people who have them. They're selling in record numbers, and are a smash success. Definitely NOT pointless.

Did I mention iPod is the sexiest and most beautiful player out there?

Get the iPod.
