Actually, the book's dust jacket. I'd lent the book to Michelle and she called me the next morning, all excited.

Michelle had taken the dust jacket off so it wouldn't get crumpled, and left it on the bedside table. Little Charlotte had reached up, grabbed the dust jacket, spread it out, and was sitting on the floor looking intently at it. Her mom first realized something was going on when she heard Charlotte talking to somebody.

She is very picky about whom she talks to .... her parents and a handful of select visitors (not her toys, not the dog or cat, and not the TV). Michelle says that she's never known Charlotte to talk to a photograph before. She thinks it's because it's just the right size (big enough to see, but not so large as to scare her). And probably she likes how he looks, too!

Michelle is teaching her to say "Bill" -- it's possible that she might start applying this name to all older males, just as she refers to all birds as "dut" (duck) in her own private language, after seeing her first mallards at the park.

I might end up having to leave the dust jacket there for a few months, as a wall decoration, since Charlotte has been looking around the house for it (then toddling off, contented, once she knows it's still there).
