The 911 call and how I burned my grilled cheese |
|
It took me till the Daily Show, but I finally decided on dinner - a grilled cheese sandwich. I add a sliced tomato. It was cooking quite nicely. Then I heard kids walking down the street. This happens all the time, but it is not usually accompanied by a very loud bang and a flash of light. (And a symphony of car alarms.)
Gun shot? Possible, but this is Canada after all. Explosion? Not common, but there was the white hot flash.
I looked out the window, and saw nothing. Still we have an intermittent firebug problem in my hood so I thought it prudent to call for backup. Hence the 911 call. They ask a lot of questions. Eventually, I became aware of a burning smell that was coming from my kitchen, not the street. It just feels wrong to ask the 911 operator to hold on for a second. I dashed out when he was talking to the dispatcher. Too late.
A couple of Vancouver's finest were here within 5 minutes. They didn't find anything. I'm glad to know that there isn't a body in my street, and my building isn't on fire.

As in black on one side.
Update. I hear another alarm in the distance. It sounds like an apartment fire alarm. Oh, and now a siren. It's going to be a fun night.

That happened here the other day. We turned the gas heater on for the first time when my wife got cold, then went down to the thrift store to do some shopping. Guess what we were thinking as all the fire trucks screamed by heheh

It's that time of year in Vancouver. The fireworks sellers are in full swing. The dogs in my neighbourhood have been howling and barking everytime some damned fool kid sets off another bloody firework. I'll be glad when Halloween is over and things are quiet again.
Bummer about the sandwich. Hope you eventually got fed. Good story though.
