Notice that the ones who use the phrase "Outside The Box", are the ones who built the box. Suddently they realize how stupid an idea it was, and try to compensate. Typical frightful management.

I had a boss who used that phrase constantly, along with "paradigm shift". I really despised that man. Mind you, this is the same person who told me a needed to be more of a prick in my management style. I always thought he was a big enough prick for the whole university, and I didn't need to be contributing to the prick attitude.

8. It's a known fact that the more often the word "proactive" is used... |
|
...the less likely it is that the company actually IS proactive.
I hate that word with a passion. The company I work for did good work they definitely had a habit of implementing before planning.

Synergy has come to mean "we're a massive multinational corporation with our fingers in everything, and we'll use every part of it to advertise on every other part."
The most annoying synergy I've seen was in the NBA finals this year on ABC. Since Disney owns ABC, they spent half time of the final game talking about.....
The Hulk movie coming out. Not basketball. Not the fact that Tim Duncan was setting all kinds of records and firmly establishing himself in the pantheon of all time great players.
The Hulk.

I also hate "usability" which usually means make it as FUCKING idiot proof as possible because there are a TON of idiot users out there just waiting to break it.

ugh!!! i heard this so much during orientation.
essentially its doing more with less people for less pay. i work for one of the most profitable law firms on the east coast and they dont want to hire new people. so the support staff (secretaries etc.) are supposed to have more than one attorney (i have two) and pick up other jobs when other secs are out.
no. ive got my own shit to do. hire a temp to answer the phones!!

I once got so fed up with this bullshit, that I started a game of buzzword bingo. We were on a project with 5 different consulting firms, and at our status meetings each week, the managers would give us all a little speech, so we all made up bingo cards with buzzwords on them and would secretly play "Buzzword Bingo" during the meetings.
I remember the looks I got when I yelled out bingo in the middle of the meeting!
By the way, the client ended up writing off $65 million on the failed project...

My company was trying so hard to win the Baldrige Award for Quality that they were trying to convince everyone that we were providing quality service. What they should have been doing was trying to actually provide the quality service.
And "proactive" would send me over the edge (it was a short trip.)

even worse when it's used in the plural. Aaaaaaaargh. I've gone through enough mergers/acquisitions to really, really hate that word.
Also, "on the same sheet of music" and the usage of "utilize" in place of the simple word "use."

There's a local business whose slogan is "A new way to office". That one always gets to my gag reflex.
I also grind my teeth when almost anyone except a mathematician uses the word "parameter" ("we need to network on the interface of our parameters" --- Aaarrghhh!)
"Mission Statement". This isn't NASA, for crying out loud! It's the local Public Health Department; all we're trying to do is keep people from getting sick.
And that memo I got saying "Let's get proactive about high-level wellness!"? I sent that right back with "What's wrong with good health?" scrawled across it in red magic marker.
