Help...Computer Geeks...
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 12:40 PM by Jack_Dawson
Sometimes when I try to play video on my Windows Media Player, (like the Ann Coulter vid) it says "Sending Request for Codec" and then it only plays the audio. What am I missing?

I'm running Win 98 (I know) and I have WM 7.

Thx,

JD

Dunno if it's still available for windows 98, but if so, run
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

For win xp users and win 2000 users, YOU SHOULD RUN THIS EVERY WEEK ANYWAYZ!

Update your media player (and ALL OTHER PATCHES AND SECURITY THINGS!)
WIth the new media player (+ some old) there are new codec packs

if that doesn't work, perhaps it's a divx encoding (not likely)

download divx codec from
http://www.divx.com
(download the free one!!!)

good luck

6. Try avicodec to identify the codec if it won't get right codec.

If the media player won't download the necessary codec and Windows Update doesn't do the job, try using Avicodec at http://avicodec.duby.info to identify the codec used . Once you've identified the codec, you can use Google to look for it and, with a little luck, you should be able to find an installer for it.

And, as Fear pointed out, quite a few AVI's out there are encoded with DivX. DivX is a popular MPEG4 encoding for AVI's but there are other codecs out there as well and not all of them are available through the normal Media Player codec update process.
