A DU top ten songs list!!

Every two years a radio station here in NYC runs a top 500 contest. They ask listeners to send in their top 3 rock and roll songs of all time. I would like to try this here at DU. I know we have many rock and roll music fans here and I think it might be fun to have a DU Top 500 Rock & Roll songs list.

So here are the rules:

1. List your top 10 favorite rock & roll songs. They do not have to be top 10 hits....you can list album cuts.

2. The song must have been recorded from 1955 to the present.

3. If you wish, you can tell us why you chose certain songs for the list.

I will try to compile the results...if someone would like to help me do that, please pitch in. I am putting my list together now and I will post them later.

Let's see how this works out! :D

1. Here goes
First, the disclaimer: this is an impossible task. But if someone made me pick 10 songs right this minute to take to the desert island, I'd choose these. Tomorrow, my answer would be different. Here's my list:

2. Traffic: Low Spark of High Heeled Boys

6. Poco: Crazy Love
7. Yes: Starship Trooper
8. Joe Walsh: A Life of Illusion
9. John Lennon: Ballad of John and Yoko
10. Pretenders: Middle of the Road

2. No can do
By the time I got through Elvis, the Beatles, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Creedence, and about 200 other acts I'd have a few more than ten songs.

I can pick just one that rules supreme, though:

Darn....thought I could, but I can't....

20. Only ten, huh?

OK, here goes. I'll list them alphabetically.

DARK END OF THE STREET - James Carr (1967)
Memphis Soul so deep, it had no bottom for the narrator to hit.

GET OFF MY CLOUD - The Rolling Stones (1965)
I still don't know all the words, but the lyrics were never the point anyway.

HOLD ON! I'M COMIN' - Sam & Dave (1966)
One of the two or three hottest soul grooves ever to come out of Memphis.

I HEARD IT THTOUGH THE GRAPEVINE - Marvin Gaye (1968)
Dark Night of the Soul, as interpreted by the greatest singer in rock 'n' roll history, not to mention writer/producer Norman Whitfield and Motown's sadly underrated session men, the magnificent Funk Brothers.

I LOVE ROCK 'N' ROLL - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (1982)
During one of the lamest periods ever in American music, Joan Jett blessed the record charts (and, by extension, the FM airwaves) with this loud, crunching, explosive, raunchy anthem. Thank you, Joan!

I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU - The Flamingos (1959)
The quintessential doo-wop ballad.

JAILHOUSE ROCK - Elvis Presley (1957)
Not only does the King sing his ass off, but for good measure this was the recording on which Scotty moore created the power chord!

JOHNNY B. GOODE - Chuck Berry (1958)
Just imagine what rock 'n' roll might've been like *without* this seminal song!

LOUIE, LOUIE - The Kingsmen (1963) So the lyrics weren't dirty after all. Who cares when you've got a party groove this awesome?

SHE LOVES YOU - The Beatles (1964)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, YEAAAAAAAH!!!

Get Off My Cloud Lyrics:I live in an apartment on the ninety-ninth floor of my block
And I sit at home looking out the window
Imagining the world has stopped
Then in flies a guy who’s all dressed up like a union jack
And says, I’ve won five pounds if I have his kind of detergent pack

I said, hey! you! get off of my cloud
Hey! you! get off of my cloud
Hey! you! get off of my cloud
Don’t hang around ’cause two’s a crowd
On my cloud, baby

The telephone is ringing
I say, "hi, it’s me. who is it there on the line? "
A voice says, "hi, hello, how are you
Well, I guess I’m doin’ fine"
He says, "it’s three a.m., there’s too much noise
Don’t you people ever wanna go to bed?
Just ’cause you feel so good, do you have
To drive me out of my head? "
(snip)
I went to google and pasted in your words like this "GET OFF MY CLOUD + The Rolling Stones + lyrics", so many things to check out out, when will stop :-)

I've always liked the Beatles and Lennon on his own is good too and Marley is like Lennon in some way. Hendrix is just something else on the guitar. Teen Spirit just simply is good but I agree with folks who say Nirvana is overrated. The Rolling Stones are pretty neat too. I've heard a lot of Neil Young with my dad and have taken a liking to it. 4 dead in Ohio *whistle* I like expecting to fly better because its the kinda music you would hear at the tunnel as I call it between life and the after life what ever that may be.

41. I was just discussing Nirvana with someone last night
He claimed that their music was brilliant and I said that it very well may be, but I could never understand a word that came out of Kurt Cobain's mouth. His suicide was a tragedy, though.

I also regret that John Lennon's life was so tragically cut short. Hendrix was a little before my time, so I'm not that familiar with his work. The Rolling Stones, who I can take or leave, are not only still around, but as old as the hills!

What do you think of Elton John or Simon & Garfunkel? And let's not forget Fleetwood Mac!:D

30. 10
It's a rock-n-roll list so,
no ska, reggae, R&B, etc. - I couldn't get anywhere near 10 if I included those genres.

These will always get me up on my feet.

in alphabetic order by song title:

American Girl - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Baba O'reilly - The Who (best scream in rock-nroll here)
Come Dancing - The Kinks
Cosmic Dancer - T Rex
I Love Rock-n-Roll - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
I Will Follow - U2 (Great guitar intro)
Mystery Achievement - Pretenders (relentless bass line driving this)
Rebel Rebel - David Bowie
Rock and Roll Music - Chuck Berry
So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star - Patti Smith ( she didn't write it
but she owns it!)

and on a different day, probably 6 or 7 different ones.

31. My 10
Roll Over Beethoven--Chuck Berry
I Want to Hold You Hand--Beatles
Satisfaction--Rolling Stones
Not Fade Away--Buddy Holly
Piece of My Heart--Janis Joplin
Rock Around the Clock--Bill Haley & the Comets
In the Still of the Night--?? sorry, I spaced...
Every Breath You Take--Police
Layla--Derek & the Dominos
American Pie--Don Mclean(OK, this is prejudiced. I saw him do it the other night & it struck me that it is a true American anthem)

I tried to pick things that really changed music. That made you notice that something was really different from the first note.

47. A top ten attempt
This has been tried before, ya know. The best thing about these lists IMHO is seeing something that I haven't really given much thought to, or haven't heard at all, and checking it out. That said, some of my favorite stuff is going to be "obscure", and it's all subject to change on a whim. I'll try to weed out the minor works and get straight to the major playas, without repeating bands in the list.

1. Jimi Hendrix - SSB/Purple Haze from live@Woodstock (this song lays it on the line and set the bar for all rock'n'roll to follow - personally I prefer some of his other music, but this is his "greatest" work)

2. Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Prose (for making the "Seattle Sound" part of the national scene)

3. Tool - The Grudge (for that awesome screaming moshpit of a crunchy groove near the end)

4. King Crimson - Great Deceiver ("cadillacs, ice cream, figurines of the Virgin Mary", need I say more?)

5. Talking Heads - Air (it bounces along just like a bright yellow helium balloon! or is it nitrous oxide?)

6. Nirvana - Drain You (once again, bringing the "Seattle Sound" to the top)

7. Black Sabbath - Warpigs (proving that anti-war songs weren't stuck in the folk genre)

8. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (is it an album? is it a song? Yes, it's one of the greatest concept albums ever)

9. Emerson, Lake, & Palmer - Karn Evil 9 ("welcome back my friends to the show that never ends", live preferred)

10. Deep Purple - Sweet Child In Time (live, of course)

With apologies to The Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Cream, Gentle Giant, Rush, Ozzy, Jimmy Cliff, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Beatles, Frank Zappa, Primus, Husker Du, Butthole Surfers, The Pixies, Van Halen, Sex Pistols, X, Kansas, U2, and about a thousand other bands that do/did their level best to make living worthwhile.

67. My Selections
Jeez, there are so many good choices. But, since you want the top 10, here's my list (in no particular order...they'd all be tied for the top 3 spots anyway):

"The Unforgiven" - Metallica
"Don't Stop" - Fleetwood Mac
"Won't Get Fooled Again" - The Who
"A Day In The Life" - The Beatles
"Shot In The Dark" - Ozzy Osbourne
"Baba O'Reily" - The Who
"Romeo and Juliet" - Dire Straits (the live version, off their Alchemy album)
"A Matter of Trust" - Billy Joel
"Allentown" - Billy Joel
"New Year's Day" - U2

There are so many more I'd list here...but it's restricted to 10...
