More dirty secrets...state workers in Philly were also given the afternoon off to swell the crowd. Of the 80,000, probably fewer than 10 % were private citizens, privately employed, not getting paid with taxpayer money for taking the afternoon off.

This has been going on in campaigns in PA from time immemorial. Pennsylvania wrote the book on political patronage.

And the poor taxpayers are left holding the bag.

I think the spinmeisters have convinced them that maybe 10 blacks will vote for Bush, so they are playing it up like Blacks are defecting away from Kerry.

went to the rally. I'm sure there were many city workers there. However, my impression was that there were a lot of union, blue collar types. The thing that struck me was that there were so few Blacks there. If it's true they gave the city workers off, it's even more remarkable how few were there.
I said on another thread, if you emptied out the King of Prussia Mall which is located in a lily white suburb of Philly, there'd be a higher percentage of Blacks present than were at the rally in downtown Philadelphia.
