11. Karl is my favorite, although he's a tad serious |
|
Not like the other brothers. I guess at reunions, he's the one who tries to keep them all in line.

don't make me choose.
I was madly in love with all of 'em (even Dumont) as a kid. I still adore all of 'em.... but I voted for Harpo.

4. Ever read "Harpo Speaks"? |
|
It came out just before his death in the mid Sixties. A great read from a guy who dropped out of second grade but was a member of the Algonquin Club "because I was the only one who would listen" and best friends with Alexander Woolcott. He and his wife adopted a number of kids because "I wanted to come home and see a kids hanging out of each window". From the book I got them impression of a fellow who wasn't pompous but very kind and generous to others-and who had a great, if whacky, sense of humor.

I read it as a kid. I cried when he recounted his mother's death.

I've always had an affinity for funny smartasses who stick it to authority figures. As hilarious as the Marx Brothers movies were, IMO Groucho didn't achieve his full potential until he hosted 'You Bet Your Life.' Even as a youngster I recognized his comic genius on that show. The reruns still stand out as timeless humor; his riffs on the stuffy conservatives who went on the show still cause me to bust a gut!

Groucho to woman with 16 children: "My, that certainly is a lot of children. Why so many?"
Woman: "Well, I love my husband."
Groucho: "Lady, I love my cigar, but I take it out once in a while."

9. I always liked Groucho.... |
|
Recently, I've been watching them again after a long, long hiatus ( new DVD set without advert breaks). I seem to be enjoying Harpo more lately. Or perhaps he just clicks easier after a long week's work.
