Man Writes $91k Check For Porsche - Only Had $900 In Account
<snip>

Troy Garrett scribbled out a personal check for $91,595.25 to buy a Porsche 911 so he could drive to Florida in style.

Problem was, Garrett had only $900 in his account and no driver's license, prosecutors say. But by the time Beechmont Motors discovered that, the 30-year-old Fort Thomas man had made it to the Sunshine State - where he signed a contract to buy a $2.5 million home and a $300,000 boat, said his mother, Susan Burch.

When Hamilton County officials caught up with him, they charged him with theft and writing a bad check in the car case. And while Garrett is said to suffer from a delusional disorder, Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Dennis Helmick on Thursday found him competent to go to trial.

Garrett's lawyer, Scott Greiner, said the dealership got the car back, without a scratch.

3. What dealership would accept a check that large
without verifying funds? Must've been a right winger.

They're always writing checks they can't cash. LOL.

10. My dealership did - from me.
Well, it wasn't exactly 91K. But I paid cash for my Tacoma. They said they would need certified funds and I told them I was happy to drive down to the bank and get a cashier's check when we knew the exact amount.

But something in a car salesman's head doesn't let the customer out the door until the deal is closed. So he talked the manager into accepting my regular old check for the truck. No credit check (I wouldn't let them) and no verification of funds (my bank won't do that, for some stupid reason). Lucky for them I had the money.

9. I worked a fraud case once
In which a woman, claiming the be a Malayasian princess, wrote a check for $67,000 (mid 80s) for a new Mercedes. She had $2 in her acct. She didn't take delivery right away, because she was having them rip out the leather interior and put in a different leather interior. She came to Nordstrom, got a credit card w/ a $300 cl and charged over $5000 worth of clothes. How? She wrote checks to pay her balance down throughout the day, and give herself an credit balance. Luckily, one of the few people w/ brains in the store was working and thought she was suspicious, writing huge checks.

I wrote a check for $17,000 to by my civic in '92. They did not call to verify funds. Car dealers are careless asshats

11. Bad timing dude, should have done this twenty years ago
Back then, before the advent of computerized banking, if you were smart enough, you could get away with such scams. Now, it is much more difficult, and getting more so all the time.
