I just fired my Insurance Clerk. |
|
This is the 3rd time she tested positive for Cocaine, Amphetamines and Barbbituates.I rehired her 2 weeks ago after she swore she was totally clean.
Andyesterday, a large amount of Narcotics was stolen out of a cabinet. (the 2 other people in my office have been with me continuously for 3 years and nothing has ever been missing).
Sometimes being a boss sucks.

Unfortunately if someone allows their recreational drug use to enter the workplace in anyway, they become a problem.

Drug addictions suck.
I used to work for the South Carolina Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (SCCADA) and there's really nothing you can do other than help them realize they have a problem.
People addicted to drugs need to hit bottom before they accept they need help, and nothing you say or do will help until they come to this conclusion on their own. Sad but true.

sometimes never get back up. I worked with a crack addict, a very nice guy when he was clean. But when he fell back into addiction....I think he lost everything.

an old friend of mine started behaving very badly and kind of disappeared into that world when his addiction took hold. I heard from him recently - he's doing the AA thing, calling people he has wronged. He was crying as he told me he couldn't believe how long his list of people is. I asked him the reception he was getting and he said they're like me - they forgive him and just want him to be better. He said he is determined not to let people down again. I wish the best for him because I believe everyone needs a second chance, and in the case of addicts perhaps two or three.
I do feel the origninal poster did not have a choice but I hope he urged this person to seek professional help.

I remember when I was a teenager, living with my alcoholic aunt and uncle, I asked my aunt why she drank so much. She told me I have bad days when I feel bad and I have good days when I feel nothing. I knew right then that alcoholism would kill her and it did. Rehab never helped her.

It is hard to be a boss sometimes but you did the right thing. You gave her a chance and she blew it. Hopefully, this will be a wake up call for her. I have a lot of compassion for addicts but you can't let them take advantage of you because they will. And it doesn't do them any favors because it doesn't give them an incentive to change.
Sorry. What a bummer.

she was a drug addict and probably stealing drugs too. If she ever cleans up, she may thank you for that slap of reality.

by rehiring her three times? That's irresponsible.

that your schedule C-III+ meds aren't kept in locked storage, considering how tightly regulated they tend to be.

I too am a boss and have a strict policy of no drugs or alcohol. In my business, people who use are the ones always getting hurt and they make the workers comp rates go up. I cannot afford them and also will not enable them to continue their destructive behavior.
