It was a tough decision
Edited on Sun Jul-13-03 05:23 PM by HEyHEY
I had to make at the bookstore. Either, "Stupid White men" , "Nickel and Dimed" or "One River"

I Went with "Nickel and dimed" "Stupid white men" is $40.00 bucks up here, I figured, "Why should I pay $40 to find out what's wrong with a country I don't even live in?"

"One River", I started a while ago, liked it, but never rreeeaaalllyy got into it.

"Nickel and dimed" was also spoken highly about on DU plus it looks interesting.

What was the last book you bought? How Much?
On edit; I also bought "black like me" cause it is an awsome book and only cost $8

1. I'm ashamed to admit
I bought the old Shelley Winters autobiography at the library for a quarter. I have no idea why. It's become my throne reading material.

I'll have to check out Nickel and Dimed.

3. Not a bad choice
I read that biography years ago, when it first came out and the public library got a copy. Parts of it are hilarious!

"Nickled and Dimed" is an incredibly important book, though, and well worth whatever you have to pay for it. It exposes what's really going on with all those largely invisible people out there working the kinds of jobs suburbanites utterly depend on to get through their lives. It especially points out the daily struggle to afford both housing and food, and how little most marginal workers have left to deal with any emergency, whether an over the counter cough syrup or something more dramatic.

The way service workers are treated in this country should be the biggest scandal of our time.

5. Hmmm...let's see...
"Flintknapping" by John Whitaker and "Handbook of Paleolithic Typology." They got recalled by the library, and I decided it was time to bite the bullet and add my own copies to my reference library. Oh, and the third book in a series of vampire novels I just got hooked on. The total was about $80, mostly due to the typology manual (those specialist publications do eat into the budget!).

I loved "Nickel and Dimed"; my copy has since been passed on to my folks (can't believe that my stepfather, a labor lawyer, hadn't heard of it!). And right now I'm wading through "A People's History of the United States." Definitely worlds away from the history books assigned in high school!

7. Very good choice...
I have read both, and I prefer Ehrenreich, of your choices.

My last purchase was The Ordeal of the Longhouse, about the Iroquois League and the way it reacted to European Pressure in the 17th --19th centuries.

I haven't read a book just for fun in a long time, but my next leisure read will be Fast Food Nation.

Hope you are enjoying Ehrenreich!

8. Good choice
I like Moore, but Nickel and Dimed is great. I did cry while reading, though, so be warned.

And Black Like Me is pretty frightening. You might also try The Miseducation of the Negro (you don't have to worry about a man if you control his thinking, or something to that effect).

The last book I bought was something legal, so no fun. But I have several on my list to buy soon, inlcuding the recent biography of Thomas Paine, Pitt's book, and something (anything) frivolous.

9. Living History
by Hillary Clinton was the last book I bought - for around $23. I really wanted to see Tucker Carlson eat his shoes. :D
