What current TV shows are you digging?
At the moment, I'm in thrall to HBO's The Wire to the point that I really don't give a shit about a new season of Sopranos not coming for at least three months or something like that.

I also recently got hooked on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, though that's not exactly current anymore. And since Spike is going to be on Angel next season as a regular cast member, I'll be forced to watch it.

Jeez, two shows out of 100 odd channels? That's pretty lame.

4. Why is there such a gap between our TV tastes and our music tastes?
Interesting, aside from Smallville and Boston Public, which I think are total crap, we have pretty similar taste in TV shows. Though try as I might I just can't get into Enterprise, but I never have been able to get really into any Trek show.

I just hate Smallville because it's Dawson's Creek with superpowers, and I hate almost all things Superman centered anyway. At least its not as fucked up as Birds Of Prey was.

from Kazaa ... much darker.

I'm into Enterprise mostly out of loyalty to the franchise. I'm waiting for it to get better and it promises to.

I like Smallville for the very reasons you hate it.

And funny - I see Buffy as being Dawson's Creek with Demons and Vampires - like Charmed with witches and demons. And I like them both.

I also adored Dark Angel... until they screwed it in the 2nd season.

7. Buffy is so much better written than Dawson's Creek
Not to mention with much better characterization. But then I love Buffy and hate Dawson's Creek, so go fig.

As for Birds Of Prey: As soon as I heard that Batgirl was going to be the daughter of Catwoman and Batman, and that she could FLY, I knew there was no chance I'd ever watch one second of that show. It's almost as bad as that one new Superman movie script I read wherein Lex Luthor is some sort of kung fu expert CIA agent and Superman gets his powers from a talisman of some sort. Total disregard for the origin of a character that pretty much EVERYONE knows.

26. You never saw Birds of Prey, did you?
Edited on Sun Jul-13-03 08:04 PM by RememberJohn
The Huntress was the daughter of Batman and Catwoman, not Batgirl. This is established in comics, too.

Batgirl was paralized by the Joker and is now in a wheelchair. She couldn't fly.

Overall, it was a good series but didn't match the original pilot which was more "Dark Knight Returns"-ish.

The newer Superman treatment (after the script you mentioned) was brilliant. But then, you don't like Superman much so you probably wouldn't agree.

Every incarnation of Superman in comics, TV, and film have taken liberties with the original origin.

31. No no NO
The Huntress in the comics is the daughter of a former mafia Don. And the Batgirl I was talking about was the new Batgirl who I read was on Birds Of Prey, not Barbara Gordon/Oracle. I KNOW Babs is paralyzed and could never fly.

All I know is that in the comics, unless it was an Elseworlds thing, Batman has never procreated.

37. Yes yes yes...
The orignal Huntress in the comics was Helena Wayne - daughter of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle.

A newer incarnation is the one you have in mind...

http://members.fortunecity.com/retcon/index.html

There was no "new" Batgirl on Birds of Prey...

42. I think that Huntress got killed in Crisis, so she doesn't count
She's not part of current, revised DC continuity, so as far as I'm concerned she isn't the real Huntress. She ceased to be after Crisis.

So who were the three characters on Birds of Prey? In the comics, it's Oracle, new Batgirl...oh wait, Black Canary. I forgot all about it.

44. Well, that is one way to interpret it...
... but she was very faithful to the original comics. I hope any future DC TV/movie adaptations aren't limited to what the characters became after Crisis.

Birds of Prey: Oracle, Huntress, Black Canary (daughter of the original Black Canary - who made one appearance and would have made more.)

..but she quit because she couldn't handle the grind of a weekly series.

I think Kate Mulgrew gets a bad rap, though. Although I would have loved the Captain to have been Commander Shelby from the Next Generation and have Ensign Rowe on board, too!

Bajoran officer on board Deep Space Nine, but
when Berman offered Michelle Forbes the job, she
gracefully declined, saying she didn't want to commit
to a five-to-seven year gig.

So we got Nana Visitor and Major Kira instead.

OMFG. That's when I noticed her too, and I really
liked her. Guiermo Ibarra, the leather outfits, they
really did that story well. I was totally hooked!!
I've tried to find a video version of it, but no luck

Then she showed up as Ensign Ro, and boinked Riker
when they had amnesia. She was so good, and when I heard
the spin off was going to be at Bajora, I just knew she'd
have to be on there. I was crushed when I found out she said
no.

She was on 24, and on The District. I've tried to see all
of her movies, too.

36. I still have a tape of where she reaches into the room

and the whip wraps around her wrist. I guess Josh
and Reva were gaslighting her at that point.

I can't believe I found somebody else who was
captivated by that story. This is so cool.

When she came back they turned her into a wimp and
made her a pawn of the original one and only Roger
Thorpe. It was awful.

And then Reva won, and GL became the Reva Shayne
show once again, and I was done.

And Stargate just doesn't seem to stack up anymore, ESPECIALLY since Michael Shanks came back and Corin Nemec got wrote off the show. Total horseshit.

Buffy surprised the hell out of me though, because the last show I was this viscerally attached to was MST3K, and before this I hated Sarah Michelle Gellar with the intensity of a thousand suns.

I worked the night shift all my grown-up life until last year. I missed the previous 12 or so years of prime time. Never got into the big shows like "ER" or "Seinfeld" or "Friends." The one show I got into and still miss is "due South."

Now, the two shows I religiously follow are "Gilmore Girls" and "Sex and the City." I also watch a lot of HGTV and ESPN.

I was just a kid when "Columbo" aired during the 1970s. As such, I never watched it back then. In the last year, though, I've developed a strong liking for that show! Peter Falk was just terrific in the title role. He was kinda like Darren McGavin's Carl Kolchak, but without the vampires and werewolves. :-)

55. I got out of the prime-time habit back in the 70s...
I was going to college full-time and holding down a job at night, so I had little time for TV. Then, after college, I moved into an apartment in center city Philadelphia, where there was no cable available and, because of nearby skyscrapers, the only channel I could access over the air was the New Jersey Network.

So it wasn't until I moved to NYC in the mid 80s that I started watching TV regularly again, though I still rarely watch many prime time shows. Off the top of my head, here are some of my current faves:

The Sopranos
Queer As Folk
Enterprise
Stargate SG-1
Law and Order (and its spinoffs)
NYPD Blue

I just checked out the first 3 episodes of "Dead Like Me" last night, and I'll probably make a special effort to catch that.

Also, there are a few shows in reruns I love:

The Twilight Zone
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Law and Order
NYPD Blue
The Adventures of Lois and Clark

Finally, one special mention: I caught "Sliders" in reruns on Sci-Fi, and it was a great show with an intriguing concept till they killed off the Professor somewhere around the second or third season. From there it was all downhill, with old characters replaced by inferior new ones, till the absolute nadir in the last season, when Jerry O'Connell's character was played by a different actor; some lame plot device was used to explain the replacement. (In the previous season or two, O'Connell's brother's character and the Cro-Mags were almost as lame.)
