I have become a DU addict |
|
In the weeks leading up to the election, I was checking in daily...reading, reading...LOVING LBN 'cause you guys monitor the Web and post what's hot so FAST! Then I started posting here and there in Election 2004. Rarely got replies, but at least I had an outlet.
Then in the days before the election, I was spending more and more time here. Couldn't help myself. Clicking between LBN, Campaign 2004 and, occasionally, GD. Loving the cast of characters and the spectrum of opinion (even the ones that pissed me off just because I knew we were all ultimately on the same team). And I posted some more and even pissed someone off--unintentionally, of course, but it was a first.
I should have been working on the peer-reviewed journal I was supposed to be editing for a client. Instead I was here...reading, clicking, posting, and reading some more. The homework for my financial management class was not getting done. Dishes were piling up in the sink... And still I was here--first thing in the morning. I HAD to know what had happened after I finally succumbed to oblivion. Then for hours that afternoon. I couldn't stop!
Now I still spend several times a day here. I marvel at those of you who ALWAYS seem to be here. How do they do it? And you're all so smart. and witty. and articulate. and brash. and crude. and passionate. I can't get enough of you all. :loveya:
I think I need help. The rest of my life is faltering. Maybe I should check into DU treatment or go to DU Anonymous meetings. :silly:
Nah... I'll get over it. Truly I am grateful for these forums and for all of ya'll for helping me hold it together this past week.
Peace, AL

5. So is this how you prove you're not a freeper? |
|
I should've known. :)
I'm just kidding, of course. Most of us have gone through this. Eventually you'll realize you need a break and take a couple of days off. Then you'll get back to it, but with a little more restraint, sometimes not even posting everyday. At least that's how I got over my DU addiction.

Actually, I went through a phase like that a while back. Back when palast 180 (sp) was initiating the multiple Plame threads. I mean, they had like 16 of those suckers going.
And a lot of posters had their tin foil hats on tight. And H2O man was in the thick of it, being all wise and, to me, cagey and conspirational. (For the record, I am very fond of H2O man and always look forward to what he has to say. And I DO think he is wise. This is just my story.)
And I jumped into the mix. A cocky neophyte looking for action. I started butting in on the middle of like the 6th Plame thread (I may be exxagerating, but this was a discussion that had been going on for some time). And I started questioning H2O's credentials. In other words asking stuff like what makes YOU so smart! Mind you, I had NO CLUE what was going on.
Boy, they let me have it! Some of them fairly politely, but mostly just ripping me a new asshole. dcb bvvgbcc vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv (sorry, one of my cats wanted to contribute to the conversation.) Who did I think I was. Accused me of being a freeper (I'm sure I had well under 100 posts at that time). told me I was ruining an otherwise very productive string of threads...
And of course I stomped off in a huff. lol Why, I'd show them they couldn't f*** with my serenity like that! LAM (laughing at myself)
Well, I eventually simmered down, licked my wounds, and came back. I think it was a month or two later. This time I spent more time lurking and getting the lay of the land. Once the election drew close, I was compelled to post pretty regularly, if for no other reason than to vent.
And that was my initiation.
Despite some of the flaming that continues to be perpetrated here, I am very grateful to be a member of DU and have thanked the founders several times for providing these forums--our last bastion of free speech under the current regime.
Peace, AL

I agree with you. I am trapped with rightwing nut jobs most of the day and DU has been a great release. I have seen a diverse range of ideas and opinions within the democratic party. I too, got a few challenges with my posts, a spirited F$%& Off from one person today. I am sure it was meant with love. Keep posting, and supporting the cause, I know I will.

7. You don't really want to know how often I'm on here. |
|
I woud be afraid to admit how much. I am definitely addicted. I even hate going to work because I don't want to miss anything new. Oh sure, I'm on and off all day but my page is always on DU and I just come by and hit "refresh" constantly. My housework has become very slow and ongoing because I'm always on and off. This place really really has helped me through the elections though. I could never have gotten through it without DU. I feel like DU has my kind of people on it yet we're all different in some aspects. I can't talk to anybody around me about how I feel about politics except for here, one other dem website and my grandpa. Yes, I'm addicted. I love you all very very much!

9. I'm sort of an addict too. |
|
This is what I do because I live in a red state, and I don't have any friends here. I spend my days hanging out with my two-year-old son. His language skills are getting better all the time, but talking with him is still not the same as adult conversation. I hang out with my husband whenever possible, but he works a lot. I can't wait to move back to where we're from so I can have my friends back and not spend so much time on this website.

No, you don't need DU Anonymous. This *is* the support group for recovering (from the election) Democrats. I just got here and I'm hooked and finding the addiction very therapeutic.
