The Open Source and Free Software group |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 01:06 PM by Commie Pinko Dirtbag
Mission statement:
Provide a place where users and developers of Free Software can exchange ideas, experiences, suggestions, and commentary.
I know, that sucks as a mission statement. Too terse. I'm open to suggestions for improvement. But anyway, I need 10 starred geeks to start the forum, as per rules.

11. I think "Computers & Software" is a better idea |
|
That way, we're not segregating ourselves from the Windows users. They need exposure to open source software.

12. I was thinking that originally, since there are so many |

basic Windows questions. But overall, I prefer this.

13. Though personally, I'd prefer "Alternative Operating Systems" |
|
Get in all the non-Windows, non-Mac users.

16. Of course, I'm just saying that I would like to see |
|
a forum that covered all alternative operating systems --- it has nothing to do with this particular suggestion, which I support.
I say this knowing that there is no way that it would fly --- there are too few users of Warp, Plan 9, Amigas, Ataris, Acorns, etc. just that it would be nice :)

14. I do intend this group to be focused on THIS subject |
|
Of course, discussions like "I always used Windows, how do I migrate to Linux?" would be totally pertinent there.

Seriously, a "Linux & Open Source" forum or just "Computers & Software" would be nice to see.

I made the switch a year ago. I dual-boot with Libranet 2.8.1 as my primary OS and Windows 2000 still clinging to a tiny partition for the things I just can't be arsed figuring out in Linux. Like the GIMP.

Hell, I can even write documentation, if you don't mind the occassional reference to certain lines of code sucking like Tijuana hookers.

Webmaster for a very large state agency. Gubmit employee. Working in an M$ shop, but due to budget constraints that may be changing.
I know enough Open Source stuff to be dangerous, but want to learn more.
Got room for another?

Every movement starts with one person-- or ten as the case may be!
At work, we just officially became "browser agnostic" after targeting IE for our web apps since the mid-90s. Plus our new security guru comes from a solid *BSD background.
I have a feeling we'll be moving a significant share of our apps/resources to either F/OSS systems or F/OSS-friendly systems. Personally, I can't wait!
