Poll question: What should we rename Reagan National Airport after the liberation?
When we liberate Washington in 2004, what shall we rename Reagan National Airport to free us from the past?

6. Revert to Washington National Airport
I refuse to call it Reagan airport. They really should wait until a respectable period of time has passed--ten or twenty years after death before they rename something. Of course if a tragedy is involved then perhaps they could waive it. But IMHO renaming stuff for Reagan was arrogance--sheer arrogance.

13. Amen
Washington National it should be.

mind you, most of these names are not possible, since it is not, technically, an international airport, you cannot fly directly to a foreign country from DCA. In fact, until two years ago, you couldn't fly more than 1,500 miles non stop from DCA.

18. JFK's a New York airport
Pretty sure, 'cos I've been through it a few times. Don't know if there's an RFK anywhere, but there should be.

I can't call Washington National the R-word, either. I never will. I know quite a few who similarly refuse. And I know a right-wing nutcase you gets a big thrill out of emphasizing the R-word whenever he's anywhere near us.

29. National Airport
I still call it National and always will. I travel to DC a couple of times a year and always call it "National".

Airline person "You're flying to Reagan National?", Me: "That's right, National Airport."

33. I concur!
Sheesh! I sound like a f**king Supreme Court Justice!

I agree, tokenlib. It was Washington National Airport the first time I flew there and that's the name I will always recognize.

I also agree about renaming airports. Must they all be named after dead politicians? Lord help anyone who wants to rename O'Hare as Daly International Airport! The name Daly has greeted anyone who goes from the airport to the city on big green signs for most of my life. Let the dubious war hero, Butch O'Hare, keep his airport - Orchard Field.

While my feathers are riled, nobody had better think of renaming the airport in New Orleans either. It's the only one I can think of with an airport code that conforms to the pronunciation of the airport name and not the spelling or location.

You can be sure that I'll carry a picket if they decide to rename SRQ, TPA, MCO, or RSW as JEB Bush International Airport. Maybe my dog will march with a sandwich board sign. He likes to go to the airport as long as he doesn't have to get on a plane. (My dog really wants to be Governor of Florida. I'm sure he'd do a better job than J.E.B.)

9. This sounds good to me
Jimmy Carter is an idol of mine, and, if you doubt me, check out my avatar. I truly believe that he was a great president and will be exonerated by history. He has done so much in recent years to promote peace throughout the world. He received a well-deserved Nobel Peace Prize, after bringing together Begin and Sadat. I have been saying that Bush* should send him to help with the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but know Bush* is far too partisan. I will change my vote from Clinton to Carter, after reading your post.:-)

He's the only hero I've ever had. And he was a much better president than he gets credit for. Not to mention his impressive career after office.

On edit: And it would be nice to see him replace Reagan this time. Good finally triumphing over pure evil.

I have no clue how he doesn't have an airport named after him.

Not only that but you've already got the AIRPORT CODE: FDR.

FDR to LAX....good ring to it!

24. Diversion: Why no standardized airport codes in the US?
How come *you guys* get to have airport codes that aren't standardized, huh? Is it because you think you're special and different, or is it because the FAA can't get its shit together? (Here in Canada ALL the airport codes start with Y, for some strange and unknown reason.)

Interrobang, writing from beautiful downtown YXU!

Sorry 'bout that... :)

21. Frederick Douglass International Airport or Duke Ellington IA
Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 10:40 AM by CBHagman
I would love to name it after Cesar Chavez or Paul Wellstone, but let's stick to people associated with local history.

And that means that Clara Barton International Airport is also quite fine with me.

For what it's worth, though, the airport is actually in Virginia, so perhaps I should be focusing on Virginians of yore...

25. He was born in Maryland
and worked in the District. I forget the name and location of his house, but I think it's either in Maryland or the District.

Still, I'd love to get into a cab and say, "Take me to Frederick Douglass, please." I never call National Airport by its congressionally imposed name.

27. No worse than naming
an aircraft carrier after the president responsible for the most American troop casualties since Viet Nam.

But good point. It would be inappropriate, at least until some more time has passed.
