Poll: When was the last time you voted for a Republican?
My voting record has been clean since 1998, when I voted for Chris Lauzen as Illinois comptroller. I've only voted for one Republican who won: John Engler, governor of Michigan. I was motivated by school spirit. The governor's mansion was in my high school's district, but our Engler's opponent, Gov. Jim Blanchard, sent his son to school in the suburbs instead.

Now, if I don't like a Democrat, I just leave the ballot blank. Let's all help each other stay GOP-free.

Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 07:50 PM by FlashHarry
He was a shoo-in, and there wasn't a Dem even close. I disagree with Hagel on many issues, but his pragmatic, internationalist foreign policy, coupled with his "Richard Perle and the rest of the chickenhawks should be in the first wave into Baghdad" comment, earned him my vote.

Sorry, folks... :)

I don't believe in giving them any additional house or senate seats, so even if the Democrat is accused of rape (as was the case in this last election), I'm still going to vote for him, because that's better than contributing to the Republican majorities in the House and Senate.

22. I voted for Gerald Ford. I was living in Michigan at the time.
People in Michigan felt that it was important for Ford to be president so that the auto industry would remain strong in Michigan.

I went through that phase were I felt I was making good money and had a respectable job so I should turn republican. I should have never done that and I regret it to this day. Jimmy Carter was a good man and I wish I had voted for him.

33. My parents voted for Ford
Their last GOP vote for president. To be fair, it was a different party then, pre-Reagan and pre-Gingrich. Ford was pro-choice and pro-ERA. In my household, the most revered politician was our liberal Republican governor, William Milliken, who was also my Dad's boss. Even Gov. Milliken can't stand the Republican Party anymore. He endorsed Kerry this year.

<<Now, if I don't like a Democrat, I just leave the ballot blank.>>

You can always do a write-in protest vote... vote for Santa Claus or Donald Duck -- anybody like that who gets a vote is a message that you did not approve of the candidate(s).

As a poll worker, I know these votes ARE recorded, and the message does get through.

84. Hey, that's allright. Welcome to DU!
My grandmother eventually confessed to having voted for Nixon. Fortunately, she was disillusioned soon enough to come out for McGovern in '72.

I think it's very important that we embrace others who have voted for Republicans in the past but have changed, a la Wes Clark. Not all people are born and raised as hardcore progressives, and most Americans are not staunch partisans on either side.

I hang my head in shame...

I only did it to piss off my dad, who was a staunch Democrat due to labor union support. I quit after the first meeting when they wanted us to pass out flyers to support Reagan's re-election. I wasn't quite old enough to vote, but I would have gone Mondale.

Now the tables have turned and I suspect my dad may be voting Repub for "moral issues". It hurts to even type it....

72. Howard Baker in the early '80s or late '70s.
Lamar Alexander for Governor in the late '70s

In both cases I flat out did not like who we put up that year, and both of them were very good men who did a good job for Tennessee

2004, voted for my friend David Evans for Appellate Court Judge because he is a good man and he was unopposed anyway

(unless the GOP mayor of south charleston ever runs for higher office-he's breaking with the wv electors and voting against dubya-pretty liberal guy-pro-choice, great on labor, the environment. i have no idea why he's a republican-but other than that, i never could vote GOP)

hell, i usually don't even vote democrat-unless it's absolutely necessary. i'm a 3rd party guy, myself.

77. William Weld, governor of Mass, 1990
He was a prosecutor specializing in white collar crime, and he told Ed Meese to stick it, so I thought he'd be a good guy. (Also I think the Dems were running someone really odious that year, John Silber, the martinet that ran BU with an iron fist.)

It took him about half a term to turn into a typical Republican apologist/enabler for big business to trample on the common good. He was the first of four Rethug governors to turn a blind eye while Bechtel did shoddy work on a cost-plus basis on the Big Dig.

Actually it's possible I registered Republican in 2000, so I could vote against Dubya (for McCain) in the primary-- not that it mattered, since he had all the delegates he needed by then. Sometimes it's really frustrating living in a solidly blue state.

78. 1984?? (not Reagan)
a small town auditor who was so much better qualified than his opponent that even the local "alternative" leftie paper endorsed him! The same paper that always spelled reagan as "Raygun" in their stories...

80. Eight years ago
I voted for my then moderate repub. congressman. But he's been swayed by the neo-con movement. I sent him a letter telling him I couldn't vote for him again after he supported the marriage protection act.

81. That would be absolutely NEVER
I have personally admired many Republicans and conservatives, including some that would shock people here on DU.

However, I maintain a profound hatred of almost everything in the Republican party platform, and its legacy in modern American history. I consider anybody who embraces the contemporary Republican political machine to be misguided and suspicious at best, and my criteria for supporting candidates is inherently biased against such individuals.

I vote strictly on issues, even when it has meant voting against friends or neighbors of mine, and no Republican has ever passed the test for me. I have voted mostly Democrat, and occasionally Green, Libertarian, and even Reform. But never for a Republican. It just seems there is always a better alternative.

82. once...in 1988 I voted for Carroll Campbell for governor of SC over
Dick Reilly...

never have since and never will again...If I don't like the dem candidate I still vote for them as a signal of agreement with the party platform and what the democratic party stands for. To me voting for a Repub is voting approval of their party platform, which I completely believe they will vote for (no matter what they claim) when it comes to crunch time...

86. 1988...
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 10:34 AM by Orsino
...when, to my everlasting shame, I voted for the senior Bush. I had married into a family of moderate Republicans, and bought the Dukakis-as-weasel FUD then in circulation. I'm still not sure why, after I so vigorously opposed Ford, Reagan and Reagan.

Sorry. I've learned my lesson.

87. I don't think I ever have, but I don't remember voting in my
youngest years. I know I registered, because I served jury duty twice when I was 18! Let's see, I've voted for Ann Richards for Texas governor, then Tony Sanchez in the last election; The first presidential election I remember voting in was Clinton's first term, and I voted for Peroe (I'm so embarrassed now). Since then, it's been Democratic straight ticket all the way, baby!
