Fiddle/Violin Players...RE 'Electric' violins..I have a question...?

Thinking of buying one (about $150 on ebay).

I want to learn some bluegrass fiddle. Can use headphones while learning but with out the headphones does it sound like a regular fiddle/violin or does it have to be connected to an amp?

1. Im pretty sure it sounds like a regular violin

without the amp.

2. An electric violin

just has a pick up added under the bridge. It's just there so the violin can be plugged into an amplifier. It's the same as an electric - acoustic guitar. It will still sound like a violin when it's not plugged in.

I think some electric violins have solid bodies.

Wow, thanks for that! I didn't know that they made solid body violins!

Well, now that I think of it.....those electric violins that just have the basic outline of the body with no wood would be like that as well.
