Why is Pat Robertson's program called the 700 Club anyway? |
|
It sounds more like the name of a local underground S&M network than a show on CBN.

4. OH OH OH... I know this!!! |
|
Just saw Tammy Faye.. The True Hollywood Story a few days ago... Pat Robertson asked Tammy and Jim Bakker to start a program on his little itty bitty Xtian Ministry TV network. The 700 Club was a plea to viwers for donations because they needed at least 700 viewers to donate to keep the programming on the air...
The Robertson reniged on his deal for a Johnny Carson-esque TV show for Jim and Tammy and Jim went of to start the PTL Network...
I'm just a plethora of useless knowledge today!

5. When he started out doing a local religious show |
|
he did a fundraiser looking for 700 sponsors, that was the gimmick, and he called it the 700 Club. He's used it ever since.

The 700 Club television program is an outgrowth of a 1963 telethon in which founder Pat Robertson asked 700 viewers to join the "700 Club" by pledging $10 a month, money needed to meet CBN’s monthly budget.

Give monthly financial donations that work out to $700 per year, more or less. Started with a need to have 700 donors who would support the ministry and keep it on the air and broadcasting.

So the site says
"The 700 Club television program is an outgrowth of a 1963 telethon in which founder Pat Robertson asked 700 viewers to join the "700 Club" by pledging $10 a month, money needed to meet CBN’s monthly budget."
But that still doesn't really answer the question "Why 700?" Why not ask 750 viewers or 1000 to join?
There's got to be some magical significance to the number 700. For some reason 7 represents perfection in a lot of mythologies; that probably has something to do with it.
