Looking for recipes for smoothies
Anyone have any recipes for smoothies? I have been tryin to loose some weight & thought about smoothies as a lunch or even a quick dinner subsitute. I hear liquids can be great for helping you loose weight. I went to Borders yesterday, but had no idea what books to look for. Other than going to my local Surf City Squeeze for a smoothie, I am clueless when it comes to making them. Anyone have any suggestions?

1. Be careful, smoothies while healthful often have more calories than
a moderate lunch.

2. Here's what I do...
In the blender:

several ice cubes

1 cup skim milk

1 banana

1/2 cup of any other fruit you like (optional)

1/4 cup of Ovaltine (it has tons of vities and minerals, and the bit of sugar in it is far less harmful than the artificial sweeteners in products like Slim-Fast)

2 big spoonsful of Mountain High vanilla yogurt (unlike most of the other brands, it contains no corn syrup)

Frappé away, and you've got a smoothie.

3. Smoothies are super high calorie
They won't help you lose weight. Also, "Liquids" don't help you lose weight.

The only way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more.

However, if you go to the www.vitamix.com web site and navagate to their COMMERCIAL blender area, you'll find great smoothie recipes.

4. I love Smoothies
Jamba Juice makes really good ones and on their site they tell you what they put in theirs
http://www.jambajuice.com/menuguide/index.html

they don't give you the proportions, but you can figure that out. That is what I do, I copy their recipes. Things that make them good (IMHO) are:
using frozen bananas
using frozen fruit (mangoes, berries, etc..) it is cheaper and works like ice
it is also tastes good to add sherbet or sorbet, but if you are trying to keep the calories down or sugar out of it then I am sure you can find a sugar free or low fat/calorie sorbet/sherbet.

Smoothies are one of the few (IMO) low fat/cal delicious foods in the world!

5. They're easy to make

Just throw some of your favorite fruits in a blender with some milk and/or juice. I prefer them thick so whenever possible I'll use frozen fruit and won't add much liquid. I especially like using bananas, berries, persimmons, pineapples, sometimes I'll add chocolate. They can sometimes have a lot of calories so I don't know how good they can be for helping you lose weight.

9. I lost a lot of weight with this one
Plop some nonfat yogurt into a blender. Pour in a bunch of frozen strawberries. Start to blend. Add Splenda artifical sweetner. So easy, so quick, so healthy, so delicious.

On the days I work out at the gym I add about three HEAPING huge spoons of vegetable protein powder available in the dry food bins at most supermarkets (or you can get the overpriced crap at GNC if your supermarket doesn't carry it). This gives the shake an unpleasant, powdery, chalky, gluey consistency but you get used to it and it's extremely satisfying once it's sitting in your stomach.

I lost 65 lbs drinking smoothines like this.

10. WOW!
Well, I'm only looking on losing 10 lbs or so. Sounds good! Surf City sells a smoothie starter kit for $20. Thinking about buying it.Comes with some recipes & some whey powder & protein & stuff. Its the powders & stuff that I wonder about because I'm not sure what their purpose is. I'm sure they're all healthy & are nothing more than vitamins & nutrients.
