Can someone explain how the "Draft" works? |
|
A couple of freepers and I had an argument about it and i want to make sure that i get it right before my next class.
I also heard that they are making you register at the DMV before your 18th birthday.
Do you know if it will include both males and females.

1. Last I heard, it was going to include females. |
|
From the ages of 18-35.
I'm not quite sure how the process works. I think they do a lottery and pick a day of the year, and if you were born that day (and over 18), they'd call you up.
But I'm not sure though.

4. That depends on how they write the bill |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 12:57 AM by imenja
There hasn't been a draft since Vietnam. At that time it was only for men and there were all sorts of exemptions for those attending college, men with children, etc... The details will almost certainly be different this time, but I don't think we can know until they present a bill. Charlie Rangel proposed one, but that wouldn't be the one the Republicans end up passing. My understanding is that all men need to register with the Selective Service on their 18th birthday. Being female, I haven't done it myself.

5. Every male has to register on their 18th birthday |

Females are exempt, for now.
No one has been formally drafted since the mid-70's, though Reservists and Guardsmen today will tell you they have had their service extended involuntarily, so they have been "back door drafted".
An actual draft would require Congressional authorization. we don't know how it would be structured, but the bill that was before the House earlier this year would draft both males and females, from 18 to 35 years old, and would severely limit deferments.
The last time there was a draft, they used a lottery system based on your birthdate. The first bithdate that was picked was assigned #1, and so on. Then people were drafted in that order, until the needs of the military were met that year.

6. Do younger people in the draft pool get drafted first? |
|
Do they go through the 18 year olds, then the 19 year olds, etc, or do they go evenly through the draft pool?

10. I have read that proposal. |

Although I can't remember where. I also read something about kicking the draft age up a bit to 35.
Why don't they just figure out a way to melt our bodies into something combustable so we could avoid the whole grinder of war.

a bunch of monkeys are more evolved than us in some respects, not you or me or just about anyone else on this board...because we are not horrible prudes who would rather kill than have sex. But they are more evolved than the 55 million who voted for Bush, which is ironic because they don't believe in evolution anyway!

Although registration of 18 year old males goes on, there is no actual draft law in effect right now. Congress would have to pass a new law to re-institute the draft. I imagine that grappling over drafting women will be one of the big issues, if and when Congress would write a new law. I personally think it is more likely that Bush will just walk away from Iraq rather than re-institute the draft, but we'll see. Anything could happen. I asked an attorney in one of the U.S. Attorney's offices about the draft, that the above is what they told me. morcatknits
